RWS Diana 36 Barrel Chop

Finally got around to sending the barrel off on my $15 Craigslist 1986 RWS Diana 36 to have it choked and crowned. I had cut the barrel to 15.5” a long time ago but just recently sent it off to John in PA who did a fabulous job and with quick turnaround. Always wanted a carbine and this was the perfect candidate. Got the rifle assembled and installed a new Apex muzzle brake/weight to finish it off. Adjusted the scope and it wasn’t long before the rifle was shooting a ragged hole at 10 meters with JSB 10.3gr. Love the balance and awesome new look!

Thanks, the scope is one of those Chinese Beeman 4x21 SS2 clones. Actually pretty decent little scope. Seems I got it off eBay for @ $69

Did you try to crown it yourself before sending it off? I'm always on the verge of going on a hacksaw rampage through my gun cabinet.

Dan- I hacksawed, filed, and brass screw crowned an Air Hawk that always shot like garbage and managed to improve it...

Nice rifle! And nice score for $15!!! I sent a 34 to John to chop and choke, and agree that it’s a much nicer package with the shorter barrel.

I did, used a 1/4” brass “acorn” nut mounted on a short piece of 1/4-28 allthread chucked in my cordless drill with some Flitz polish paste. Made a really nice crown. I also polished the face as well and reblued it. It was a really nice job BUT the choke had been completely removed and the groups had opened up after chopping the barrel. It was easy to tell since you could push a pellet down the tube and it would be tight at the breech for a couple inches then get loose from half way on out the new chopped end. Before chopping it would get tight again for about the last 4” from the muzzle. So I had to send it off to be rechoked. Made a world of difference. If you plan on chopping a barrel I would push a pellet down the tube first to see if you get the same result if it’s tight, loose, then tight again at the muzzle you’ll remove the choke once you chop it and possibly need to send it off. From what I understand it’s common in Diana barrels from their mfg process. Other mfg may vary.

I have a D38 that I've been long tempted to have chopped. Seeing posts like this makes my palms sweat. I think I'll try something less permanent first like detuning it.

+1, longer barrels makes cocking easier.  All other times they just get in the way...

I wonder if a shorter barrel can have more practical accuracy just by getting the pellet out that fraction of a second sooner. IE, hopefully before I lose attention span or twitch or something.

    I agree with you on this, the TXH200 has a 9" bbl and these are very accurate guns with great FPS.

   Try being 5'2" tall!!!!! I love carbines too!!!!! Lol
