ISO Big bore pellet trap design

I’m in search of a big bore bullet trap.  I have always used phone books. I would like to make one out of plate steel that would capture the projectile so the lead can be re-use. Does anyone have a design they can share?

 May I suggest the rubber mulch trap, there are many variations, but even the powder burner shooters are using them.

Just take the design for a rimfire trap, and make it bigger and heavier. I would use 3/8" steel for the backplate, but much heavier for the real high power guns. Side plates, and bottom baffles can be lighter.

My next purchace (If and when() will be the snail type that is used to capture Magnum Handgun rounds. Perfect for reclaiming lead. It has a steel pot attached that catches the lead after it goes thru the snail shell like spiral at the back of the trap.

I built one. 12 ga steel( .104" thick). Thicken as needed to let you feel confident. It is a 30-60-90 wedge that rests on a tray 6" deep in sand. 1' x 1' mouth. 1' x 2' top/back plate, and triangles that are cut diagonal from a piece 1' by 2* sin(60)' long. I made three of them. Material was pretty cheap, and the steel was TIG'd together. It positively laughs at the big stuff, and little stuff like a hot .30 pellet rifle is just about enough to get its attention. They are still intact after 6 years of service w/o repair of any sort.

Yes, these are perfect and well worth the money.  They are as heavy duty as they sound in the description.  I bought one last year and love it.  I put a 9" fry pan under it as a catch can and empty that into a bucket to reclaim the lead.  I'm probably going to have to invest in a mold or two now!

I like the rubber mulch traps. I have a 2cuft box stuffed full. It will stop everything thrown at it. It also gives you a chance to inspect the pellets and bullets for issues inside the bore as it doesn't deform them on impact. Reclaiming the lead is easy, but messy. Dump the trap into a bucket of water and the lead falls to the bottom and the mulch floats.

Well, mine is not made out of steel as mentioned, but it will stop a 300 FPE + Slayer at near P-B-R all day long.  I have never had a slug to punch through the first tote and into the steel plates of the second tote I installed for a backup.  It is a quiet slug trap unlike the steel ones, which I really like.  It is heavy, but I use a dolly to move it around.  Also, a pulley system when needing to lift it up on a table for indoor use.  One day I'll reclaim the lead via a water bucket/trough.

I like that rubber mulch trap.  It is quite and effective at high power.  The more power I put to mine the louder it gets!

Made these a while back. 3/16" steel plate, the snail is auger tube cut with a zip disc...close to 3/16" wall. Have been used with .22LR and a .45 Sam Yang without issue. Spent lead drops out the bottom onto a dollar store cookie sheet for collection.

I love the simplicity of this design.  Is it made of A36 Steel?

A36 yes. Very easy to make. Can make out the carry handle in the pictures...just 1/2" hot rolled.

I got my hands on a large sheet of 1/2" Stainless and have it angled up against a couple of 4x4 posts with a large mixing tub full of sand below it to catch the lead.  Watch Craigslist and Letgo.  I picked up the 1/2" SS for only $20 and it is 44"x36".

All I had access to at our local metal yard was 2’ x 2’ x .25” plates.  Man it was a job cutting them in half.  Reminds me of Tank armor.  This contraption weighs no less than 70 or 80 pounds. lol At least it won’t tip over when it gets hit.  The opening is 12” x 17”. The plan is to gorilla tape a piece of 1/4 ply to the opening so two 8.5” x 11” targets fit top to bottom.
