Judging a book by it's cover....often a mistake.
Simple ugly "covers",but prtetty good "books".

Spring time....although a cool spring at 67F....so deciuded to take the simplest (And I gotta admit, rather beat up and ugly) 12gr. co2 rifles.
Really....no BS...was kind of amazed at how well they did. Does make me think I've been just spinning my wheels with the HPA's and PCP's for back yard (20-30yard) uses.
Pretty much by luck, they both ended up at nearly the samje speed. The .177.2260 and the 5mm/ QB78 both shoot at about 650fps. Difference in pellet weight (10.3gr. for the .177 and 14.3gr. for the 5mm) make for different energy levels (9.6 foot pounds and 13.3 foot pounds) but they follow about the same balsitic path(hold over and windage).
BOTH have the following:
1. A simple straight 4X scope.
2. Run on 12gr.
3. Absolutly nothing really "fancy"done to the valves. Could pretty well plug in a factory replacement valve and get about nthe same results.
4. Something f"fancy" done to the barrels. The Crosman got a donor barrel machined/fitted from a Hamerli 850 and the QB got a 5mm barrel made frrom a HW 5mm blank.
5. Both shot from a make-shift rest (rice filled bags on a patio table) at 25 yards (but steel tape measure).
6. NEITHER one has been shot for the last 4 or 5 months. Both put away with some (the bottom end of co2..the "left overs" that you'd usually just vent). Evidently the 2260 leaked that little bit of co2 sometime over storage. The QB still held some co2 pressure.
7. Both have home-brew LDC's attached and both are very back yard friendly.

There are a couple more 12gr. rifles....one a lot nicer...that need to be tested after a long winter's lay off.
But very likely, for the next months, the PCP's /HPA's are going to get their turn in storage and the 12gr. guns (even these two "ugly guns") are going to see a lot of use.

Nice! Good idea for a shooting bag- I've seen BIG bags of rice for relatively cheap, more than enough to make a few rests.
Been putting off breaking out the 2400s, also need to let the CP1 see the light of day. These are all set up as carbines. There are a couple BB pistols that I've been shooting all "winter" long here in GA- Crosman 454 and Daisy 1200. They loose very little in MV in the cold, I suppose due to their mild state of tune.
When you going to break out the "big guns"?

Did try a much more expensuive sporter 12gr. CO2 rifle. A repeater based on the Hamerli 850 but moade to take dual 12gr.
More attractive rifle, more expesnive, and a lot less woerk to get it shooting well.

Changed target papers.
This rifle has a 6X scope.
Still about 650fps,but this time with 7.3gr. JSB'sw, so only like 6.6 foot pounds.

No matter how I juggle it...try to justify it...put a twist on it...the real-world difference between the rifles is 'nuthin'.
OK...going to just find the best price on 100 to 144 (a gross) of 12gr. and just feed the 12gr.rifles for the next 4 months or so.

i don't shoot my PCPs nearly as much as i do my springers and CO2s. actually, the only time i use the PCPs is during hunting season. i use my 2400KT and modded 2260 all year long at home, shooting pest birds from inside the house.
lightweight, simple, reliable, accurate, and
deadly
quiet.

I just remembered before I use the 2400KT I have to install a fresh piercing disc into the ProTop. Old one is almost too worn down to pierce a cartridge anymore. It was set up for 10m target and has a 2400S tune, so it's down on power but high shot count. Not necessarily a bad thing but I want to see what it'll do with a bit more punch for 35 yard plinking and such so I'll set it up with a standard valve and TP (plenty hot enough for a 10" LW barrel and retain a decent shot count). Besides I already have an S w/Williams peep. The KT is scoped so for me it's better suited for longer range shooting.

Very nice Robert!
Good to see the "Boys of Summer" back out again! Still a little too cold here for the most part. I have only had one day of 12g CO2 weather so far this spring.
Your 5mm/ QB78 was an inspiration to me and got the wheels in my head turning last fall.
I am hoping to have my .20 completed by the time it gets nice here.
Thanks for sharing!!

5mm is almost a dead end.....but a fun one.
QB's are pretty simple to rebarrel, esp. when doing a one-offand not a production run.
BArrel machinging is not all that complicated but does need a lathe. Can get by without a mill if you are careful about hand forming the loading platform.Found it easier to get the barrel shankl just right for that particualr reciever, then inserting it and scribing the "excess" by using the walls of the reciever as a guide.
Also found it's a bit easier to work a .22 bolt DOWN than to work a .177 bolt UP.
Not wishing you bad luck, but I did screw that up as some of the bolt probes are really hard and brittle....and I snapped the hollow probe off. No spare bolt on hand.
So shorted the bolt body behind the snapped off probe a little, made a whole new spearate solid probe, and silver soldered it onto the bolt, and (learning my lesson about breakage) formed it by files.
Did notice that Pyramid Air does have the heavier weight JSB 5mm listed in stock. Was announced and had been waiting for it to actually show up....pricy, but 500 count tins are on the way.
https://www.pyramydair.com/product/jsb-match-diabolo-exact-heavy-20-cal-15-89-grains-domed-500-count?p=1510
Don't think they've be super useful in the co2 rifle, but I've got two 5mm PCP's that also need to be fed...hoping it works out in the Webley/Hatsan Raider.

Either way, will run the new 5mm pellets though all 3 rifles to see how well they do.

Well, the prob will be the tricky part for sure. I went the Crosman "lego gun" route with a 2260

shot the 2260 this morning with it's favorite H&N FTT 14.66g 5.55mm pellets.
25 shots per cart.
average 653 FPS for about 14 FPE.
TKO makes it soooo backyard friendly.

Yesterday it got up to 67! so out came the 1740!
Today is supposed to be 70+ when I get off work so I am thinking my old 160 and maybe the XS60-C.
But we'll have to see what is on the Honey-do list

DRUM ROLL...…
The difference in 12gr. Sporters is: "J A C K"
I will admit, the 4 sporters have been mine for a long time and have hadamble time/testing for the simple stuff to get tweaked/adjusted/tuned. QB/Crosman/Hammerli/or SPA 600
But it's still "jack" so far as accuracy.
{"jack"being defined as no more than 4/100ths of accuracy difference for 4X5-shot groups at 25 yards....basically 2/10ths of a MOA.}
Bascially I don't really give a hoot which I take out for summer pest bird pesting. Velocity isn't much different, so trajectory isn't drastically different...given the same accuracy and close to the same trajectory (over the short distances of summer),why should I really-really care?
