P-17 Trigger Spring

I had to replace an o-ring on my pistol. While at it I disassembled the trigger parts and gave them a good once over. One of the post I found showed stretching the sear spring, a small coiled one with hooks on each end. I pulled on it some but was fearful of destroying it and gave up. I have read that replacement parts can only be had by purchasing another P-17 and using parts from it.
How do you guys stretch springs safely, especially the small but strong ones?

Hi Ray,
I have used two pairs of 6'' visegrip pliers, solidly clamped on each end of the spring. Hold close to your chest and pull short strokes at a time, watching the length of the spring. Of course you could measure the spring before stretching and go in small increments. I've stretched mine about 3/16'', trigger is much lighter but I have experienced no problems on cocking, the trigger will latch with no hiccups. If you already polished the trigger parts, you'll get a REAL nice trigger. Also, don't know if you already neutralized the automatic safety function or if you want to, it's a good time to do it . Very easy to do, and IMHO very convenient mod too.

Possibly wedge a large flat blade screwdriver between the coils.

Thanks guys, I will try using the small vise grips and measure as I go. I need to leave the safety in for now. Grand-kids will be shooting it also and want them to get trained with the safety function.

It doesn't take much to stretch it, so go slowly. I think I stretched mine by accident today when I put it back together. I was annoyed with myself because I didn't really want to change the trigger feel on this gun, but I'm actually shooting better, so I think I can live with it!

For what it's worth, TW Chambers has that spring for about 6 British Pounds plus shipping. About half the price of a new gun unless you need something else from them to justify the shipping costs.
