That's really interesting. Even as a younger guy, I do occasionally have a bit of trouble with open sights myself. I'm only 22 but my vision is quite bad, and I have astigmatism in both eyes, even more-so in my right (dominant) eye. I mostly just try to get through it and I'm still able to shoot quite well, but it takes a bit of patience to shoot really good groups.
My late grandfather, for about the final 10-15 years of his life couldn't see properly down open sights, or even aperture sights to save his life. He would somehow still get a "double"/blurred image with only one eye. Tried switching sides, nothing would work except the crosshairs on a scope. But I'm glad we found what worked and were able to enjoy shooting together for a long time.
Ultimately, it seems to come down to experimenting and finding what type of sight works best, but a good old-fashioned scope will likely do the best in our own experience.

Red dots don't work very well for me because of my astigmatism I guess. I always see comet tails.
I prefer lower powers for offhand shooting. 2 power scopes are few and far between. I did find a Monstrum Tactical 2 power scope but I haven't had a chance to test it.

I did not like dot finders at first. I got a cheap one the Crossman one. It has two levels. On and Off! :p Same thing, come trails and other weird artifacts.
I got a better one that had variable intensity and it works great.

I wear readers but my vision from arms length out is 20/20 but I can't shoot the guns with open sights like I use too, I think my favorite one for open sights is my CP2 (Master Blaster) with the rear sight much further away from my eye than a conventional open sighted gun I can get a better view of the rear sight because it's not near as blurry. I can still shoot a golf ball with my Mini 14 at a hundred yards though, that has a peep sight and I'm a fan of peep sights
I should probably start using this gun for the red squrrels in my back yard without this scope, I think it would work out better.
The warmer weather is subsiding so I probably won't be using this gun too much for a while anyway but next summer . . . yes.
