So not sure if I missed a post but have we said which tanks are able to be certified for up to 30 years?

From what I know the carbon fiber tanks are aluminum bottles with layers of carbon fiber wrapped around it. In case of failure it is not a violent explosion. If the aluminum is breached the carbon fiber shell bulges but does not rupture suddenly and catastrophically. Aluminum is very corrosion resistant. Airplanes hulls are made of it. Me thinks the 15 yr life span of CF tanks is a conservative estimate by federal regulators of a potentially very dangerous product. I shelled out for a new CF tank but since I am filling it myself I am not getting it hydro tested and will use it for the rest of my life - unless I notice deformation of its exterior.

I never heard this before, not saying it isnt true, just never heard it before.

Yeah, I get he makes a living selling tanks but, there's also a good reason tanks need testing. And sure, the requirements might seem like overkill but better err on the side of caution. Not trying to preach but if you've seen other data to the contrary, we all could benefit from seeing it too.

Transferring my knowledge of the field of high-end bicycles, I expect it's really a matter of what abuses the tank might have experienced, not a matter of time or even regular use; and as someone above said, firemen give the tanks a lot more abuse than airgunners do.  By that, I expect he means things like sharp impacts and dropping, particularly in situations where the urgency of the job is more important than extending the life of equipment that will get replaced on a schedule and on someone else's dime.

I appreciate others above exposing the junk science and scare tactics.  We see it in lots of other fields too.

they are careful not to mention that the tank that ruptured catastrophically in the vid.,  was an old fiberglass wrapped tank. A MUCH weaker type of tank, and not rateable to 45000 psi.

I would suggest if one does not want to be criticized/judged for their actions that they don't discuss them on social media. There will always be "squeaky wheels" looking for opportunities to be heard as well as those with agendas.

Anyway, ok, its was a weaker tank, I'll acknowlegde that. Are you saying carbon fibre tanks don't/can't rupture catastrophically? Not making the connection between the two?

Everybody is free to do what they want, I'm persoanlly just trying to make an informed decision, thats' all. Instead of taking someones personal opinion and anecdotes as a statment of "fact".

Clearly tanks are not blowing up left and right but, I'm not sure thats a good enough reason to start making up your own guidelines and erroding the safety margins built into the regulations. As always, YMMV!
