I loved my stock Benjamin xl. My only complaint is for the size and weight of the rifle I didn't find that it's performance was significantly better than my np2. I recently fitted a crosman .25 xl barrel to my .177 Gamo magnum and was very pleased with the result. The gamo magnum in .25 produced 30 fp and is very accurate. While I was working on my gamo I compared it to my xl. They are the same diamentially except the gamo was more powerful. I was looking for a replacement piston seal for my gamo and I ran across an ad on ebay on replacement gamo magnum ram, seal and end cap for $64 from a seller in the Soviet union. I bought it and fitted the ram to the xl and now the xl is performing close to 30 fp in .22 cal.
The instructions to install are as follows:
The Gamo magnum gas ram will installed in a xl will increase the power from 24fp to 29 fp. The xl ram is rated at 75 kg and the gamo is rated at 85 kg. If you make the conversion the cocking effort will increase but not so much that you will regret the change. The change is reversable. My velocity increased by about 90 fps across the range of pellets. The 18.2 gr H&N barracuda hunters had the highest fp at 848fps. The crosman premier 14.2 at 925 fps. The 11.45 h&n green at 1017. All group below 1/2 at 20 yards. The pulse of the rifle is naturally stronger, but the shootability did not seam to decrease.
I purchased the gamo ram from ebay.
Gamo Hunter 1250 / Socom 1250 gas ram + rear tube + piston seal + gasket
the gamo ram is about 1 inches longer than the xl ram. In order to fit you must install it with the cylinder in the piston. The stock xl ram is installed with the rod in the piston.
1) The Gamo ram has a coller on the end of the cylinder. It must be turn it down so it can fit and center it in the piston.. I just put the rod end in a drill and slowly turn it resting on the open jaws of a vice while pressig a file on the coller. Take your time and Do Not let it get too warm. Don't press down so hard that the rod would turn in the piston. Keep testing the fit until it will slide in the piston.
2) to install I added a 2mm flat rubber faucet washer in front of the ram in the piston. this I'll give the ram a little more preload.
3) the gamo ram rod will go through the part called BT1500-00-1 Back Spring Guide. and rests on the end cap. The end cap has a nice inlet already there. I added a inch long piece of 3/8 shrink wrap to the tip of the rod so it fits snug in the hole In the back spring guide.
4) reassemble and shoot.
