Stored uncharged and no problems

Never store any gun pumped up,  that has to be cocked before pumping. It'll weaken the hammer spring.

I dont and FYI my 853 doesnt need to be cocked to pump...

I put a 3-9x32 Kruger scope on mine just to determine what pellets were the most accurate.
With the scope, it groups 10 shots into 1 small ragged hole at 18 yards from a bench rest.
One of the reasons that I bought the 853 was because of the peep sights.
Because it shoots so accurate with the scope, I have not installed the peep sights yet.

Even with my old eyes I like the factory sights...was curious as to how they shot scoped...Ive got plenty of scoped guns ...will try to keep it peeped....thanks for the reply

Don't store charged.
I only use diopter sights on mine.  I use the 753/Gamo sights.

My CMP 853 does not need to be cocked to pump.

Neither of my 2 853s nor the 953 needs to be cocked before the pump. If I had to, I would assume the valve spring has been/needs to be replaced.
I don't store them charged, and all 3 wear the target peeps.

Rather than start another thread bragging on the accuracy of these guns....using the factory peep and front globe with circle insert and using a rest...wearing glasses at 10 meters I can split cards...of course this takes multiple tries but still.....LOl...I like this gun

Look at the receiver. Operating instructions should be embossed on the side. They should operate the same as a daisy 880. Unlike the 880, they can be modified to pump uncocked.
The instructions should read...
Open bolt
Put on safe
Pump
Insert pellet
Close bolt
Etc.

It certainly makes no diff.... to me...but doesnt have that on it....does say daisy powerline 853....

The one I gave my niece had that on the upper left clamshell. I modded it to pump without being cocked.

The Daisy/Avanti 853/853C manual (Rev 10-08) says the gun will not retain air unless the bolt is retracted but in my experience w/2 bone stock CMP 853s, they too pumped and retained air w/o retracting the bolt. Whether that means there was a running change made to the gun that is not reflected in the manual or what I can't say. Just saying.

Regardless of the safety, I prefer to NOT cock the rifle before charging.
The rifle can't accidentally discharge if it is not cocked.
I suppose the pressure of the hammer on the valve could prevent the valve from seating fully.  I have not had a problem with a leaking valve when not cocked.
