R1 does not get enough credit...

You know... all this talk about underlevers and PCP... i came home from work after a crappy day, went to the man cave and picked up a rifle that i have not shot in a while just for plinking... My Good ole R1 in .177. I know... to big, powerful, etc, etc, for plinking but i put a can at 20 yards and i was picking out the logo letter by letter. it is a really a accurate gun and i would not doubt it would give my TX a run for it proverbial money... Then I looked at it and started moving the can down the yard and into the woods... It hit every time all the way to 80 yards, off hand... Man I love this rifle more than any other rifle out there. There is gotta be more guys like me out there, guys that quietly adore their R1s above all... I think i will sell some stuff to get it in .22... Just to honor this beast i think i am calling in sick this friday and hitting the farm for some pest control...

I once owned two R1s (one a .20) and have suffered sellers remorse for years now. Sadly I sold them when hard times hit very hard. During that period I also sold my FWB 65MKI, and my P1. I've not been able to replace them with equivalent equipment. I have three Chinese rifles because I could afford them, and they are cheapies: B4-2, B3-3, and recently the Beeman 1073 (Chinese RS2) dual caliber. Only the Beeman has any real semblance of quality, and it does not come close to the R1.
Taking chipmunks at 30 yards was easy for the R1. It was ragged single hole accurate, as was the FWB pistol. I've been an airgun sad sack for years now. I hurt whenever I think of them.
When you're up, you're up. but...well...you know.

Yep, on my maybe someday gotta have list... guns on that list have an odd way of showing up on the doorstep from time to time.
I think a .20 would be grand. So I am sitting here in a house full of airguns that don't get shot that much and envying that one, that I don't have, but we grew up admiring in the Beeman catalog or Shooter's Bible or wherever.
Yuh, it'll happen. Someday. God love ya for giving it some sunlight!

couldnt you just get a 22 barrel for it? i would think that it would be cheaper and you wouldnt have to sell as much of your stuff. even if the barrel is 200, that is still alot less than a whole new gun. just my thoughts on the matter and what i would do

I want one in .22. but I also want a .177. othing wrong in having 2 R1s...lol.
have th opportunity to get a .20 carbine... i just dont like that caliber. Always so difficult to get pellets... and the .22 does just as much damage... the true holy grail is a .25 cal.... now we are talking. but i haven't seen one for sale ever...

Yeah, I agree it doesn't get the credit it deserves anymore due to all the newcomers on the market, I have a HW 80 .22, I think you'll find .22 for the R1 is it's best caliber as .177 chokes it up too much but you'll see what I mean once you get one as I've had one in .177 but this beast deserves the breathing capacity of the larger caliber a bit like a good sports exhaust system on your car if I could use that analogy to open her up, it's a classic of all time in my opinion with a great history and development behind it, Robert Beeman is a true legend!

The Beeman R1 Supermagnum by Tom Gaylord is one of those books you can pick up after a few years and still enjoy a refresher read, truly worth getting, I didn't know it was out of print and Amazon have 3 for sale used $110 up to $495 what! glad I got mine years ago when it was released.

It certainly isn't worth near that much, LOL! Only to the mutual admiration society, perhaps. Someone had one for sale recently, I believe on the Yellow.
Lillysdad, check you PM.

you are the man!!!!! sent him a PM, lets hope he still got that copy... : )
By the way, went to look for a R1 in .22 and ended up with a R9 in .20.... funny how things happen. The shop had the R1 carbine in .20 but the r9 shouldered better. I need a rifle that i can carry on long hikes... lets see how this one fares at the range...

The R1 is a timeless classic with a proven track record. I love my RS era .177. All OEM except for a Macarri spring and a couple spacers. My newest R1 is the .20 carbine. Talk about. an awesome rifle. Only issue I have with it is I shot the Benji cylindricals in it and I believe I permanently weakenned the main spring. They aren't all that accurate either and I'll NEVER shoot them again in any .20 cal springer. As a matter of fact,...I loathe them POS pellets!! Besides, from my research they are heavier than the original design and the originals were more cylindrical without a swaged waistline!!! The JSB's are excellent pellets in my .20 and accurate as the day is long!!! Simply put,...R1's RULE!!!!! tjk

wow... the R9 is a great rifle also! we are talking 715 fps avg with the JSB and ragged hole at 30 yards. once i worked the drop i hit a golfball at 110 yards. Not a long range rifle like the R1, but a great short to medium range... a bit twangy but hopefully with a tune it will get better. i ve shot the benjis and they were accurate on the 9, but only shot them at 670 FPS... only good thing is that they are readily available. This R9 is turning out to be a good little rifle, but a R1 it ain't... : /.
