Daisy 880-10 Pumps?

Daisy recommends no more than 10 pumps (my guess is for warranty purposes). The rifle seemed to perform better at greater distances with 12 pumps on small game. Are 12 pumps really bad for the seals or should it do just fine?

 12 is my norm. Through extensive chrony work, with about 20 880's total, I have found a stock or near stock Daisy 880 is most efficient at 12 pumps. 15 pumps will give you even a little more power. After 15, unless you have done extensive porting work, and increased the chamber volume, 15 pumps is it, ....... you will gain speedup to 20 pumps stock, but not enough to warrant the effort.
  12 won't hurt a thing. 15 won't hurt a thing. Crosman also says stick to 10 pumps. Nothing to concern ourselves with.

I have an older Ted Williams 799 and an older 881. The pivot pin wants to slide out from side to side in the pump arm linkage. When I took the guns apart for some upgrading I found that the pin was designed to fit tightly into a plastic sleeve in there to keep it from slipping. Both sleeves were cracked which allowed the drifting. My first thought was that this was the result of over pumping over the years. Both guns have metal pump arms. I doubt that 12 pumps will ruin the gun but, this is probably the area that feels the most pain and suffering.

  I actually see more issues with extensive wear on metal arm 880's than plastic arm 880's. A few of my 880's are plastic armed, 1995's. 21 years of pumping, no issues.

   Metal arm 880's, just a few years older, always need to need some repair in that area. I think it has more to do with pumping poorly, and not over pumping. If one doesn't pump straight, a plastic arm will forgive, a metal arm won't and it'll just wear something else out.

That's a good point Tom. Just watch a kid or someone without alot of experience pump a gun and you'll cringe. I'm always amazed when I find a vintage gun that's not all wobbly and worn.
