Got my new Benji Trail NP today...looking for some old threads

For the Benji Trail NP .22:

Favorite Pellet:  I recall from last weeks reading...H&N FTT (clone of Beeman FTS), CPHP, others?

Performance specs:  I seem to recall about 19 to 20 fpe was the usual that most owners are getting.  If I can get this out of the box, I am unlikely to break down the rifle for further tuning.  Correct?

Tuning:  Also recall a potential defect in factory assembly of seal causing nicks and tears in the seal.  Seem to recall the "Tesla" seal  from Maccari is the one we need to replace it.  There appears to be several "Tesla" seals on his site.  Which is the correct one?

Any disassembly / reassembly  tips?  What actions to take before installing new seal? Deburring? Is honing air chamber going to improve performance? Which lubes on reassembly and where?

Trigger: I know the answer to this one...CDT GRT III trigger mod is a considerable improvement.

Did I miss anything important?

The old data has to be converted to be able to be loaded here at the new digs. Converting takes the right program and some time. There's also a cost to any program or conversion process. Admins are working on it and should have an answer soon. I'm sure hoping all of the original database can be uploaded here. Sure hate to lose years of VERY valuable info.

If I am not mistaken Gene was the first one to do a tear down on his NP and found yes the his seal was nicked.

I am no where near an expert in this area and have never really taken a gun completely apart except the action out of the stock.

But know most of these guys recommend a first cleaning...

Me personally I live by the 'If it aint broke, don't fix it" montage . I take all my guns out the box and shoot! if there are any problems you will notice them, and atleast you know you didn't cause them



I'd say shoot that new gun....put about 500 pellets through, and see how she is doing. then go from there.

dieseling is to be expected the first couple hundred shots, but should clear up by 500 shots through.

Maybe, but don't rule out that your gun may like a different pellet.

Deiseling when first testing the gun can make the numbers higher than what the gun is eventually capable of. My 22 Trial XL's first shot went off like a 22 rimfire. Speed was probably way up past the speed of sound. Speeds continued to be high, slowly getting lower as it was burning off the Chinese mystery oil. Cleaned, de-burred, re-lubed and installed a new seal at about 500 shots. Speeds leveled off a bit lower than the first few hundred. Hopefully will go up some as the new seal wears in.

The factory doesn't deburr the gun so getting a nicked seal during assembly is very likely. Mine was really chewed up.

Unlike with the Trail XL, you'll need a spring compresser to open up your Trail NP safely. J. Maccari has the moly lube. I used a light wipe of automotive silicone grease on the seal and the compression tube - light coating of moly on the outside of the piston, the ends of the ram and the cocking rod shoe and slot.   

Trigger: I know the answer to this one...CDT GRT III trigger mod is a considerable improvement.

My Trail NP shot the H&N FTT pellets very well. It averaged 19.5 FPE and shot .5" groups at  30 yards. One day I decided to remove the shroud to clean the Chinese oil from the outside of the barrel. The shroud was screwed on so tight that I bent the barrel in the process. Stupid mistake...

I sent it back yesterday. I was hoping to just get the barrel replaced because I had the gun tuned really nice but I have a strong feeling they are going to replace the whole gun. That's why I put the stock trigger back on.

The seal on mine was also nicked up pretty bad. I deburred the tube (especially the 3 holes near the end of the tube) and lubed it just like Paul said. I then put on a new Tesla seal:

1/2 inch @ 30 is great !!! New barrel, or new gun, when you get it back I hope it's just as accurate as your other was !!!

When re-assembling my XL, I found I had trouble getting the whole assembly back together, there's a little spring-loaded do-dad on the front end of the group(someone should know what it actually is) that you have to lift up just before the cap is fully seated. Not sure if yours has the same exact configuration, but I hadn't come across any mention of this in all the threads I had read prior to tearing it down.

That's your sear. Too bad the old site info isn't available yet, I and some others have detailed the tear-down and reassembly of the SS, Trail and NP guns. When you slide the trigger group back in, I use a toothpick to lift and hold the sear up and clear before pushing the trigger group all the way in. Then after installing the spring guide and locking it in, pull the toothpick to drop the sear into place.
Any other questions or problems with disassembly or reassembly of the Benji guns, just post away. I'm sure one of the members will be more than happy to assist.

My first Np liked the JSB 18.1
I sent it in for a new ram & they kept my tuned riffle with Bob's trigger.
I was upset to say the least. Now I have at least 1500 pellets trough this one & still have not found the right
ones.
P/A has been out of stock on the H&N FTT 14.66 & the Beaman 14.6 FTS
So I just ordered some Rws superdomes 14.5 I will let you all know how they do.
I have all ready tried cp,cphp,JSB 18.1,Benji hp
Frustrating.

Lots of places sell FTT and FTS pellets. My Trail NP shot those the best. I would find another place to buy them.
