Panther help

Hey there guys.

Well I have been talking to my buddies about air rifles, and working on getting them converted over to our side of things.  Well one of them was back home at his parents house, and found that his step dad has a RWS Diana panther 34.  The rifle is around 2 years old, and is a .177 cal if that matters.

He was trying to sight the rifle in at 10 yards and is getting groups that are 15" or more!

I suggested that he look at the barrel to make sure it was clean, and it is.
I have never had one of these rifles, so I am at a lost.  So if you guys have any suggestions or help that would be great.

check the stock screws and barrel bolt to make sure thier tight and you might want to try a different pellet

He might be holding the gun to tight if he isn't use to shooting a springer or it may have a broke spring or a bad seal or breech seal.If anything tell him to loosen up on the hold on the gun.Like Mark said check stock screws.

15 inch groups at only 10 yards? That sounds like everything that could be wrong, is wrong. That one may need professional help.

I will let him know.   I think he is getting the air gun bug really bad as well, as he was asking me what I thought about the BSA Sportsman HV   This is coming from the same guy that shoots high power matches, and is apart of the guard shooting team. 


So check the screws on the stock, making sure they are tight.  Any specific weight it should be torqued to?
And ask about how he is holding it.

He can try the cphp from walmart they are cheap and work great in alot of guns that what I use.

15 inches @ 10 yards? Wow. He's not even reliably hitting a standard 8.5 X 11 sheet of copy paper  . Is he using iron sights or scope? If he's using a scope, I would switch back to irons. I would check the tension on the bolt pivot. A rough estimate is when cocked, the barrel should hold it's position (when released) not fall under it's own weight. Then snug up all the stock screws if needed. Not too tight as you can crush the wood in the screw holes. If he's shooting it off a rest, make sure he's not directly resting the stock, barrel or both on anything rigid.



Clean the barrel and visual check the crown. Try a couple of other pellets too. Even if all you do is go to local Wal-mart or other sporting goods store and buy a couple of different tins. If the groups are better with irons, then his scope is toast, non airgun rated or both. Let us know how things turn out

Could be a bad scope if he's using a scope.  Or barrel sway...check the tightness of the barrel pivot bolt.  And make sure the barrel locks up tight.

X2 on the scope. recently i had a gun all over the place. took the scope off and it had a "rattle" sound. probly a broken lense in there. shot the gun open sights and couldn't miss

I would remove scope tighten the stock screws an the screw that hold the barrel by the trigger just snug them down not to tight. Try some different pellets an shoot with open sights if you can,t get 1-2 inchs groups at ten yards Something wrong, Rest your gun on a folded towel with light grip. good luck.

We are going to be hitting the range here this week sometime.  He is still wanting to steal my FWB300, so he is trying to work his way up.

I will look over the rifle when I see it at our indoor range here in town.

one thing here do not over tighten the stock screws its best to remove them and and use blue loc tight and snug the screws and let it sit over night for best results.

Ok guys time for a check in...


Well I have the rifle in my basement right now.  Looked it over really good and didn't see much wrong with the rifle.  I took a few shots with the iron sights, well best I could as I couldn't see the sights very well    Shots were in a vertical string, so I counted that up to breathing and heart beat.

I then put on an RWS scope that he had, with a one piece mount.  Took 5 shots and made a really nice clover leaf hole.

Was talking to my buddy and found out that him and his step dad were gripping the forend of the stock as hard as they could, to hold the rifle down during the recoil.   Explained to him why you don't do that with a springer.  So he took a few shots and was surprised with how well it shot.

We were only shooting at 10 yards mind you.  But tomorrow we are going to push her out to 80' and see what she does.

That's all it takes an experienced springer shooter to show them.Good work and happy shooting.

15" spread sounds like a majorly broken spring and lots of loose screws.  See what YOU can shoot with it. If you can't get a tighter spread, it will likely need a disassembly and inspection.
