average cost to ship a air rifle ( m rod mostly)

Just looking at what people are spending, last time i shipped a m rod to CA it was like $65 UPS,   about right or are you guys finding USPS and fed ex cheaper?

I've spent anywhere from $35 to $60 shipping rifles across our nation.

Seems like USPS is usually the cheapest, if you can get the package dimensions under their oversized rating - which I was unable to do with a solid pillared case.

FWIW: Removing action from stock can keep you below over-length charges.

Even with insurance I've never spent over $30.  I usually use FedEx but have used USPS too.  The price difference is small.

Just sent a QB to SD from Maryland. USPS would have been $39 and change. UPS Ground was $31. Same estimate delivery date.

Just sent out an R9 to Florida a few days ago. Didn't break it down. Was expecting about $35, but it was $45 and some change w/insurance and tracking. I use my city's Main P/O, and the clerk said their rates went up substantially about a week ago...... I will be separating the action and stock, henceforth.

If you check the price broken down it will be the same. USPS doesn't charge for oversize until the L+W+H is 108".

All the prices for USPS went up on January 17th.

To say that I have had bad service with USPS recently is an incredible understatement.  I sent one barrelled action 3-day priority, it took three weeks, no kidding. After two weeks when tracking showed it sitting in the same place for several days, I called USPS and had a track started. After waiting for the originating office to get back to me, then make phone calls, etc, the package magically started moving again.

In another case, I sent a complete rifle 2-day priority, because it was the only viable shipping option for the rural recipient. Took a week.

I would say that using any other carrier, possibly even Juan Valdez and his donkey, is a bargain in the long run...

I had the same exact situation. After I started the process the package arrived 2 days later. I then get an email from the post office saying "We don't see any problem, looks like the package has arrived." Mine was stuck in the Florida facility.

There are a lot of variables involved in rating your shipment. Dimensions, residential, residential rural delivery, and of course weight and zone. I would input your package variables on the carrier websites and shop the rates. My guess would be UPS or Fedex Ground will be the least expensive based on my knowledge of the weight of the Mrod. USPS is great for residential shipments around 3 to 4lbs or less ( not a hard and fast rule ) Priority Mail. Mrod will be 10 to 12 lbs or so packaged with stock I'm guessing.

Never go to a "UPS Store", their prices are crazy!  If you ship directly from the UPS terminal, its a lot cheaper.

Yes - avoid the UPS Store if at all possible! Office Depot is better than the UPS Store.

Ok, now I am curious. Clerks at my branch always measure circumference + length, and say that OVER 85" total is the surcharge. I've watched at least three different clerks use this method.

 My HW was 50" long x 3.5" deep x 10" wide, at 77" total.......
