RWS460 and Vortek kit...
«
on:
February 26, 2011, 07:13:05 PM »
I recently got a D460 in .22 for a great deal from Airgun Depot. I needed a good hunter. It was in good shape but I decided to put a Vortek Kit in it based on my past experience with my R9.
Tom Gore called me (!) and asked if I wanted to try a firmer spring than the one that was in the current kit. He said it might be more difficult to cock and that it might be more power around 25-27 ft lbs. That sounded great, so I ordered the kit, with the more powerful spring, and an extra "standard" spring ( around 21-24 ft lbs). I was so shocked that this owner of the business called me to ask me what I wanted, I really appreciated the customer service.
the "Hi-Yield" spring is wrapped in the white paper below.
It took some doing as I had to shrink down the guide so that it would fit in the thicker spring. I used a Dremel and rigged up a "ghetto" lathe, and some 200 grit sandpaper. I put the seal in hot water for two minutes and it was on with only a small struggle...
The shot cycle is just like the r9, but bigger. No twang, no torque, very short, sharp shot cycle. I am PLEASED again with my Vortek product. Now I feel like I have a really GREAT hunting air rifle. D460 in .22 with Vortek Kit and Hi Yield spring kit. Centerpoint 4-16x44. I can't WAIT to take this out to 50-80 yards and see what happens.

enough talk about this D460!
Well... it is a sweet-looking rifle...I guess I have to admit it's on my list of "nexts"...that Vortek kit must be awesome...OK... I can stand to hear a little more!
How about some chronograph numbers? (I need to buy a chronograph one day).
Well done! Handsome rifle, and good shooting too, Barcabarca!

So do you have access to a chrony? I'm curious to know what numbers "Hi-Yield" spring produces.

Well fellas let me tell ya storie, the VorTek kits are awesome I just put one in a HW80 in .22cal. The gun out of the box was shooting 749fps
so I sent the tube out for a sunnen hone and a R1 kit from VorTek. and had the Barrel cut back to 15'' from 20'', after I got everything back from the vendors and put it all back together this gun turned into a monster it now aves 830fps with CPHP's the shot cycle is smooth but it has some recoil now but the rifle is dead nuts accurate I had planed a review here very soon on this rifle so i'm only giving you a tid bit !

That is sweet. I like the looks of the 460. I'd like to have one of those and an HW77 and HW97.
What I need to do is put either a Vortek kit or a JM magnum kit in my Diana 48.
I'm thinking about putting the magnum spring in my .22 B30. It's running 775 fps with Crow Mags. It hits hard and is smooth as silk with the JM D48 kit. If the magnum kit had been available when I bought my kit, I would have gotten it. I'd love to get 800+ fps from it.
I wonder what fps I can expect with either a Vortech or JM magnum kit in my .177 48?
Where do I buy Vortek kits?

Awesome gun and great story bout the Vortek customer service. They are definatly top of the line. I am very interested in chrony numbers with your highyeild spring. They came out wih it about 4 months after i bought my pg2 kit for my 470.
For those of you thinking about getting a vortek kit for one of your guns, i would not hesitate anymore. They are worth every penny and the coustomer service is the best.

I would really be interested in chrony numbers as well. I have been looking at the 460 vortek kit, and would like to know your results.

I have a question about the 2 springs you got, did you count the coil differecce between the 2 springs? and how many coils in the smallest spring you got compared to the max powered spring Tom sent you ?

Ok all, Thanks for your patience. I now have a new F1 Chrony so that I can answer the questions:
1. Cocking effort. I measured with a bathroom scale and a book a la Paul Capello..to 52 lbs avg of 5 tries, but it sure doesn't feel that difficult..
2. Here are the Five shot strings by pellet. I shot it about 5 feet from the Chrony per the instructions.
3. I got kinda odd results as they were the supposed to be the same weight, but the results were fairly different.
RWS 460 with Vortek Hi Yield Spring and seal kit..
Crosman Premier 14.3 Box
1. 915
2. 907
3. 906
4. 921
5. 919
6. 906
Average: 912.3 fps
FPE: 26.43 (!!)
Crosman Premier 14.3 Hollow Point Tin
1. 928.7
2. 948.1
3. 908.7
4. 945.5
5.945.6
Average: 935.3 fps
FPE: 27.78 (!!)
It likes the CP box a little better for accuracy at 25 yards than the CPH...

murderous numbers! thanks for sharing. With that kit your 460 is averaging 100FPS over my TF-87(835FPS), which I believe is a clone of the 460.

Hey guy's,well I'm gearing up my 350 with a Vortek kit as well right shortly after my experience with my HW85! Also I had the pleasure of talking to Tom Gore myself,(Couldn't believe it when he called) and I have to say,a Nicer Gentleman you will not find.I really enjoyed talking to him as I never imagined he would take time from his busy schedule to call me in NS all the way from Michigan,But that he did,so I say any man that reaches out to the regular Joe and takes the time to talk for almost an hour,is a Great guy in my books.
I can speak from experience when it comes to the kits as my 85 was twangy, buzzy and a real sassy bugger to shoot until I popped the Vortek kit in,,and now she has just a solid,(but gentle Thud) when she hit's and is throwing CHP's at a mere 960 fps,the Weihrauch F&T's at 894 fps and Predators at 914 fps so I was pretty Impressed. All these speeds are checked on two Chrony's,the F1 and the Beta as I was kind of shocked to see a 64 fps increase in the Predators,(But I can't say I didn't like it, he he).
Now I can't wait to get one in my 350 as they are kicking out about 900fps and it's also smooth as silk from the testing that's been done so far.
With Vortek,IMHO (they are smooth as silk, with lot's of power),so how can you go wrong?
Thanks,
Troy
