Tuned her last Saturday, let the loctite cure overnight and dialed her in Sunday. All I can say is WOW! She broke a spring back 2 years and I’ve debated over installing either a JM or Vortek kit. Since JM’S site is only partially open, the decision went way of the Full Power PG2 Kit from Vortek, while my prayers go out to James! I de burred, honed and lubed her the “Tuna” way with the exception of Heavy tar. No tar for the Fraulein! It is not necessary with the plastic guide sleeve and tight tolerances. In addition, I did use some of the lube the kit came with, but only on half the spring and on the plastic sleeve. I put JM Molly on the rest of the spring. Super lubed the chamber walls. I put JM Moly paste on the piston and just on the outer edge of the piston seal and all appropriate moving parts and contact points, all in accordance with CDT. I full tuned my Gamo 1200 big cat last year using JM’S lubes, seal and spring all with absolutely fabulous results. So I know from experience just how top of the shelf JM products are, but I also moded the Big Cat with a “poor mans Vortek” and the results were so sweet that I really wanted to try the real deal. I also want to say that I considered trying Krytox lube as some here highly recommend, but since I had on hand the “dinosaur” lubes needed, I decided old school would be good enough for me. I have no doubt however, that Krytox is just as good and probably better then old school lubes. Hats off to all the great knowledge offered here from everyone at GTA! With all that said, here are some pictures with commentary. Thanks ahead of time for your views and comments.

Here’s the OEM spring guide and broken spring. Just a side note, not impressed with the spring ends out of the factory, very rough, all though you wouldn’t know it by the rifles performance.

Here’s the PG2, piston and old OEM piston seal vs. Vortek piston seal. Also a shot of the new breach seal witch the rifle does not need at this time but it was only 4 bucks, so I will pit it away for a rainy day

Here’s the Vortek piston seal installed on the freshly sanded piston. The Vortek seal seats more snuggly then the HW seal.

Here’s the PG2 setting in the piston. I removed the OEM piston sleeve and washer as they are replaced by the PG2. They will go in my spare parts box along with the OEM spring guide

I purchased the new style HW cocking shoe from Vortek since it was only $4.95. I also put a slightly stiffer spring on the safety because the safety always seemed fussy. I see JM sells a stiffer safety spring witch resolves “issues”, so I thought I would try and come up with something because I’m to cheep to spend $5.00 shipping for a $3.00 spring. Went through half a dozen old pens, found one I liked, cut it a little longer then the OEM spring, took a lighter to the cut end and compressed it with a pair of needle nose pliers. Eight dollars will stay in my pocket thank you.

It took 9 shots to get her in the zone at 30 yards. I chased the POI for a few tight groups; I figure she was working out her velocity. This is were she took up residency. Scopes cross hares in line with the target cross hares, 25 shot in a row using 7.9 CPHP’S at 30 yards. The gun is smooth as butter. Shot cycle is superb. The gun always shot like a million bucks, but now she shoots like 2 million and sounds like a million as well. I’ve been shooting solid targets for a week now and she is really driving tacks. I’ve been shooting out as far as 50 yards with a very flat trajectory. The gun is extremely accurate and an absolute pleasure to shoot. I will try and get some chrony numbers this weekend and maybe some more shots on paper to see were she is breaking in at. I have spent about 200 pellets so far and I am more then impressed. Thank you Vortek! What an impressive product! Not only was the fit and finish of the PG2 top notch, but it is out performing my expectations.

Nice rifle and good job. I like your spring compressor and that is clever using shrink wrap to secure the tube at the bridge.

Great write-up. The HW95 is an excellent all purpose rifle.
What kind of muzzle brake is on yours?

Thanks Dan. Iv'e used shrink wrap for years at work. It just clicked in my brain when I went to grab a strap last week. Its quick, easy, strong and harmless to the finish.

Dan I made that muzzle break with a pc of pvc. I capped one end off with a slightly modified washer, filled about one inch of the capped end with boat epoxy, drilled a one quarter inch hole in the end. To finish it off, I sanded a put a bevel on the opposite end then spun it on my miter saw with the depth of cut set to make the reliefs for bling. Gloss Black krylon paint gotter done. Wrapped the barrel with a little electrical tape for a snug fit. Checked it recently and the bluing is fine. Total length is six inches

Nice Work! Keep that old spring, you may want it for something to experiment on down the road. Heat it up with a torch, close, grind and polish the end and then you have a good to go spring for another project!

I would like to see a close up of the brake that you made if you have one. I can't make it out very good on this computer.

I am curious to see what the chrony #s are when you get to it. Did you size the seal at all or just put it in as is?

One more thing, that group at the end, is that at 50? Nice shooting!

It came out great. Thanks for explaining how you made it. I may need to experiment with pvc. Is it 3/4 inch pipe?

I did not size the seal, I just put it in. I did save the spring and I do have a possible project for it. Here are some close ups of the muzzle break. It is made out pf 3/4 pvc. That grouping was at 30 yards after about a 2 dozen break in shots. I'll try to chrony tommorrow and maybe get some 50 yard groups.
