New Discovery on it's way

I am so thankful to this forum and have used it many times during my introduction to springers.  I finally took the plunge and purchased a Discovery with pump from PA.  I had not invested in the details of owning a Discovery before placing the order.  I made the decision based on small articles and the intro price.  As I have begun to read your many challenges to the Discovery my excitement has turned to apprehension.  With such posts as damaged barrell rifling, fewer shots per tank, noise, leaks, poor quality open sights,poor quality plastic trigger I am wondering if I should open the box.  And if I do what should I now expect.  Could someone please post a great Discovery experience and also give me a lists of "do's and "don't" before I fire the first pellet down range?  I am really green to this area of air gunning, but will be retiring next year and wanted to get into pcps as a hobby.  Please also understand I may not be familiar with abbreviations for some of the terminology used in your replies.  Thanks ahead of time for your replies.

Remember tens of thousands are sold and you only hear of the few that are bad here. crosman is excellent and will set it right. my disco in 22 shoots cheap CPUM into a .3 ragged hole at 30 yds. at 50 it goes into 3/4 inch . it is light easy to sling accurate easy to pump up. shot count is about 12 shots but only because power freaks wanted more velocity so they put a heavier spring in it. mine goes around 850 fps with UM's. do not listen to doomsayers you will love it. oh CPUM is crosman premier ultra mags

Thanks for the info.  I wanted a gun like this to hunt.  I am not a target shooter as a hobby however, I do want to have some time shooting with my grandkids. I am not going to be real particular on trying to get a lot of shots, just accurate ones. I do plan on getting one of those wrap around the stock cheek pieces and a shoulder strap.  I am undecided if I will just get the one that straps on the barrel and stock or put in sling studs. I know this will be a little loud to shoot in my backyard but, I have a little apprehension about doing the quiet modification.

In August of 2013, I ordered my Discovery .22 from Pyramyd Air. [You may notice that I am typing complete words and not using abbreviations or acronyms.  I feel this technique increases understanding.]  {You will find a link at the bottom of my post to "Abbreviations / Acronyms"}  Now back to the subject at hand.

My Discovery was purchased with the hand pump.  Both have been a joy to use.  When the combination arrived and was unboxed, I cleaned the barrel of the rifle with Goo Gone.  After thoroughly drying the inside of the barrel, I then moved on to some shooting.  I shot several pellets (Crosman Premier Hollow Points because I had many of these) and determined that the rifle barrel was shooting consistently accurate.

Next I mounted the scope, a Bushnell 3 - 9 X 32.  To sight in the scope I used the same pellets and started by shooting five pellets before adjusting.  I was hitting about two inches to the right and about one inch low at 25 yards.  I adjusted 20 clicks left and eight up.  After five more shots, I was hitting about 3/4 right and 1/2 low - so, ten more clicks left and another eight up.  Five more shot showed that I was close enough now to kill squirrels.  The attachment is showing the 26th through 30th shots.

Since that time I have tried different pellets:  Crosman Boxed Domes (which I am using now), Gamo Hunters (Poor results), Daisy (Poor results), RWS SUPERDOME (Consistent accuracy one inch low), and the Discovery ULTIMATE HUNTING PELLET ASSORTMENT (Mixed results).  I have also had to resight my rifle a couple of times since then because it has been bumped while hunting or transport.  (I ride a bicycle to my hunting woods.  From last spring ---> .http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=54165.0;topic seen)

I am very satisfied with this Discovery .22; and I feel it does everything it was designed to do.  I have made no changes to the internals of the rifle and don't plan to.

I have a .22 Disco and it is the gun that will keep me from buying more. It is very saccurate and easy to shoot I did some tuning to get my shot count up but it stayed accurate thruout all.

I have been around guns my whole life and shot everything from Indian trade muskets to target rifles. I have just started shooting co2 air guns this spring and made the leap to PCP's recently (I bought a refurbished Discovery). So far it has been one of the most accurate and easy to shoot rifles I have had, I use a hand pump to fill it and it really isn't a problem even for an old fat man like me ! I did cut some coils on the hammer spring to get more shots per fill, but it is still plenty good to hunt small critters with. You really don't have to be apprehensive as you have an unlimited knowledge base with this forum. Good luck and enjoy tour purchase.

I bought a refurb Disco .22 from $$/&@ and am now thrilled with it. It had some bolt issues but I sent it back to Crosman and they put in a new bolt. Now all is well. I only use CO2 in it as I already had the bulk fill set up. It is shooting 30-40 shots at 673 FPS at 70 degrees F. That's all the power I'll ever need.
Mike, don't be shy about toning down the Disco bark. I put a TKO on mine and it's quiet. I think TKO makes the best for Crosman guns.
You'll love the Disco and, as stated above, Crosman customer service WILL take care of you if you have a prob.

Clean the barrel, check the screws, fill it, shoot it.  Can chronograph shot strings or just blast away at targets.

The only immediate problems I’d hunt for would be an air leak while its just sitting there  or if the rifle wants to spit out puffs of high pressure air at the shot anywhere besides the muzzle.  A new gun, if it had one of those two problems,  would just send it back and start the waiting process over again.

If it’s acting right (which almost all of them will be), I’d not consider doing anything to it until you’ve put a few 100 shots though it and got a feel for how well it shoots.

Then clean that barrel again and do some accuracy tests with various pellets…most of them are a little picky about what they’ll shoot well.

OK..this is your last chance to send it back un-modded. So long as it doesn’t leak, doesn’t send stray puffs of air out of odd openings, and shoots at least one pellet well, you’re going to keep it and not send it back.

By now, you’ll know what irritates you (if anything) and what you’d like to change about it. 

Some triggers are actually quite decent out the box.  Can always make them better, but it might not be your top priority.

Think the first thing most users end up wanting is a little less noise.  Most of us visit the TKO site and order a pretty simple cure.

From there, it all depends on what you want to change.  More shots at less power? More power with less shots?   Stock too short?  Point of impact wandering around from day to day? Whatever it is you want to change, there's probably a way to do it, but at least you're starting with a problem free gun.

Five to ten shots are taken for target practice almost daily- so shot count isn't that big a factor.  I've also taken squirrels up to 25 yards away.  The .22 Disco covers all the basis for me, it's accurate and lightweight.   I would like to put a Marauder trigger and Boyd's Blaster Stock on it just because. 

The thing about reading to many posts:  Even though the Mrod trigger generally gets great reviews, there have been posts that state the trigger needs modifications.   This causes indecision.  Know what you plan on using the gun for and if it fits your needs- happy shooting!

In a nut shell, I love my Disco.  The avatar is a five shot group at 21 yards.  Yep, that should put fear in those pesky tree rats in the backyard.

Suspect the new Discos are a bit louder; they use more air and earn more energy, so I'd expect them to produce more noise to go along with that.

Effective decent diameter shrouds aren't just add-ons.

For a really useful shroud, would need to raise the breech up to allow room between the barrel and air tube. Are some custom breeches that are set up higher, or could add a spacer under the existing breech. Would probably need a different (longer) transfer port,  longer striker pin, and perhaps longer action screws.  Either a custom barrel band or live without one (although the barrel is kind of thin and whippy).

I have had mine a short while and made my own PA, clipped a couple coils off hammer spring and did the 3-screw trigger mod and polished trigger parts which was quite easy and well worth it. The link below is an excellent post and easy to follow on the trigger mod.

Don't have a db meter to give you numbers of a before and after TKO installation, but noise is a big factor for me.  There are houses on both sides and one behind, so shooting discretely is a must.  I shot the Disco after incorrectly installing the TKO and it only tamed some of the bark.  Then I realized the barrel wasn't inserted as far in as it should have been.  Now it can be shot in the backyard w/o issue.  I haven't shot a shrouded Disco so no comparisons can be given.  But for me, the TKO does the job.
