Parallax/focus failure in a Centerpoint 3-9X scope?

A Centerpoint 3-9x40mm AO scope came with my Benjamin Trail NP rifle 3 years ago.

At first, I just set it to 6X and 30 yd parallax and pretty much left it there.  This was great for hunting and pest control, just grab and shoot, and the crosshairs stayed easily visible from 10 yd to 40 yd.

Lately though, I've noticed that the focus seems to be getting worse and worse.  If the crosshairs are sharp and in focus at 20 yards, the sight image is blurry at 40 yards.  And to focus at 40 yards, I have to set the parallax at 60 yards?

Is this a symptom of a failing scope?  It seems like POI shifts a bit when I change the parallax settings as well, which could explain why I'm constantly chasing a zero.  I've pretty much eliminated loose screw and ammo as culprits.

3 years on a nitropiston, it's shot.  I have yet to buy a good one, took three back for exchange, sold the last exchange for a loss, never taking it out of the OEM blister pack.

The last one was on a WallyWorld springer, it never focused, boxed it all up for the refund. Three strikes, centerpoint you're out, I' done.

I'm looking at a UTG Bug Buster in fixed 6X.  I figure all I ever use is 6X anyway, and a fixed power means one less point of failure vs. a variable.

 Fixed power scopes get a bad rap, you can't get a more solid build. Try adjusting your ocular.

Tried adjusting the ocular, no dice.  If the crosshairs are crisp and visible at 20 yards, they're still almost faded out at 40 yards, and vice versa.

My Hammer's 3-9X scope doesn't do this, and I dug out an old Tasco 3-9x32mm AO airgun scope and neither does it.  I threw that on there, and I'll see how it does for zeroing tomorrow.
