Scope will not stay put.

I am at the end of my rope on this gun, a Gamo Silent Stalker IGT.  I really like how this gun shoots, very nice groups out to 30 yards.  I have a problem in that I can't keep a scope on the stupid thing...going to try one more thing (whatever your experts suggest short of flinging it into the river).  First I do like the gun, it is smooth cocking, and easy to shoot well, it is also pretty light and that is a plus for me.

I can't keep a scope on the thing.  The kit scope (yea I know) that mount ripped itself off the gun and damaged the stop hole in the receiver in pretty short order.....ok perhaps I did not have it tight enough.  I tighten down the scope mount again pretty darn tight this time, put on an extra stop I have laying around from days gone by, and sure enough pushed that sucker right off the gun and further did a number on the hole.

Ok...lets try a "good" mount.  BBT (big brown truck) brings me a BKL mount....still slides....tighter....still slides (talking sliding on the dove tail)....tighter...still slides....tighte....snap, well I guess that was as tight as it would go.

Back to the drawing board.  I am guessing that this this is just a monster.  Any suggestions on how to keep things still on the gun.

While I never had a scope slide off my R9, years ago I did have a scope slide off an R10 which had a bolt on pot metal scope rail. Here is a pic of the scope rail that was damaged due to insufficient stop pin projection from the Beeman one piece mount..........

I've also had issues with the stop pin holes in my R9 steel receiver getting "deformed a bit" by the small diameter screw in stop pins that come with the Leapers style mounts so I made up a sacrificial steel short sleeve to absorb the force of the stop pin........


Anywhoo.....the issue with your sliding scope may also be insufficient stop pin projection like I had with the R10 of years ago. With the Leapers style mounts I use I position the threaded scope stop pin over the stop pin recess in the receiver with base screws lightly tightened, then I screw the stop pin in until it lightly BOTTOMS on the receiver stop pin recess. Then I tighten the base screws to 30 inch pounds of torque. Then I remove the threaded stop pin and apply some BLUE thread locker and finish up by lightly snugging the stop pin to the bottom of the recess.

BKLs huh? I've also had issues with those mounts staying put and this "adjustment" solve my issues. Before mounting the BKL, first use the base screws to "squeeze in" the clamp so it won't slide on the scope rail after the screws are loosened. Next, use a screw in the "spreader hole" to open up the clamp till it will JUST slide on the rail and position as needed. Pic of the BKL "spreacder holes"........

Remove the base screw from the "spreader hole" and I'm betting that you can't pull the mount out of position by hand because the tension of the "pre loaded" clamp will be so tight. The final step is to torque the BKL base screws to the max BKL recommended torque of 35 inch pounds.

Concerning the two piece BKL double strap scope mounts........be careful because the "straps" are less than 1/2" wide and are held with fine thread #8-32 screws. This combination of two narrow straps per ring and relatively large fine thread screws makes it easy to deform your scope tube. Here is a pic of my .177 R9 showing scope slippage with 10 inch pounds of torque on the strap screws........

Now here is a pic of my scope tube that was damaged with only 15 inch pounds of torque on the screws which is the minimum recommended torque according to Vortex.........

You can see the distinct impressions made by the BKL top straps. By the way, the scope doesn't slip at 15 inch pounds of torque on the strap ends....LOL, I wonder why.

Since my issues with the two piece BKL double strap mounts I've nixed them and now use the cheap $15 UTG mounts with the almost 1" wide lined caps secured with 4 screws and have had no further scope damage issues. LOL....and the scope doesn't even slip in the rings with 12 inch pounds of torque!

Get a Leapers droop compensator mount. It has 4 dovetail screws and 2 stop pins, and then becomes a Weaver mount for the scope. You'll also need to get LOW weaver rings so the scope dosent sit too high. This works perfectly on my Bone Collector... Zero movement ! ... You can get all this from PA for cheap.

I use a Hawke one piece mount.  It has a pointed set screw as a stop screw.  I ground off the point so I could maximize the contact area in the stop hole and get rid of the ramp effect on the screw.  One could also just purchase a flat end set screw.  It works for me.

Thanks for the help guys, I really want to scope this rifle, it shoots so nice.

I will continue and try the information given here.....this thing will not win....it will get a scope.

I did three things to my Titan that I think helped keep the scope on it...

light weight scope....I think you have that base covered if you're using the factory included scope

cleaned the mounting grooves and clamps with brake cleaner...clean to the BOTTOM of the V of the notch

used Loctite Blue in the GROOVES as well as on the clamping screws...1 drop in each groove filled them end to end, but I given up on pretty I just want the scope to stay put! (once dry you don't see it)

and I did the usual clean all screw threads and use Loctite blue on them and pencil lines in several places as witness marks....all this is stuffed picked up off this forum from here and there..


~100 shots through it so far and no movement



on thing not specifically found on here by me was using the stick on tape stuff that crosman lines their rings with...I had a new set of rings (single clamping screw) and I picked the tape out and reused it in the factory included (twin screw) rings...
