Walked a couple of miles on some roads that usually produce for us on opening day for not even a sighting of a grouse.  We had a nice walk though.

I have just found out that I can hunt grouse in NY with an airgun. 

I don't think I have ever seen one before it saw me.  It would certainly make the difficulty scale increase.  I'll have to give it a try when the season opens.

We just walk trails or ride old logging logs and look for areas of sign (feathers, scat, or dusting bowls) and then look for them in trees or on the ground.  We get a couple of limits every year (3 per person per day) but often just get a good walk and fresh air.

Up here in Ontario we are allowed 5 per day with a posession limit of 15. That is any combination of Ruffed and Spruce grouse. I hope it is a good year for them as last year was the first with airgun (on 10 day archery moose hunt) and it was a poor year. I ended up with about 10 for the trip.
