Resurrecting my old 880

When I got back into Air Gunning I went to my parents house and picked up my old 1389 and 880. Re-barreled the 1389 and since the 880 was not building any pressure I just put a few drops of ND30 into the tube and pumped 2 times and let it sit. (Thanks Tom!) I did this nightly (shot it and then cock and pump 2 or 3 times) and in a couple days it would build pressure, and it held it  over night.

Being off today, and the rain steady coming down I decided to fiddle. I made a new barrel for the P17 and then decided to tackle the 880.

I did a complete disassemble, clean, lube and reassemble. The internals were in great shape. I was going to fill the piston slot as David has wrote about but found out my piston was flat. No slot. Then I stretched the hammer spring and compressed both of the valve springs and he had done. Not sure if made a change as no Chrony and hadn't shot it in quite a number of years.

I then put my new ($6.99 shipped off Ebay) Horton 4x30 Crosbow scope on and backed up 10 yards.

Took me 7 shots to zero the scope to hit 3/4" high at 10 yds.

I then shot the below groups with the POA being the top of the orange bulls-eye. Looks like the old gal can still hit. Groups are pretty close, but I think she likes the el-cheapo Daisy wad cutters the best. The trigger is a bit heavy (especially compared to my modded P17) but it is pretty smooth.


I do need to try and find a foam wiper for the piston as it pretty much disintegrated when I touched it. I think I should also get a nex bolt as I snapped the end of it off and it's being held on with crazy glue.

you have me interested in what you did to the 880. I have one that was just given to me by my father it was the gun he had growing up. So what is this ND30 that you are putting in it and where are you put it in the gun?

If you open the cocking arm you will (should) see a stamped "Oil Here" with an arrow on the under side of barrel/cylinder cover. With the stock on the ground drop a couple of drops i there - with the arm open. Cock the bolt and pump a couple times, dry fire and do it again. On the final time just cock and pump - don't fire. Left it sit over night and then do it again.

    Yup, the trigger is stiff but breaks cleanly and consistently.

  Did you tape the muzzle?

   I filled my stock with silicone. Adds weight to the 880 and makes it easier to hold on target, adding to accuracy. Takes about 1.5 caulking gun tubes to fill it. Just remove the butt plate and fill. Then reinstall the butt plate! Simple mod that works!

   My 880 shoots best with Crosman boxed heavy domes 10.5's.

Tape it? Hadn't seen that. What does that do? I did "squeeze" the outer cover so that it fit the blade sight a bit better and got rid of the wobble.

Just did this last night after reading another one of your posts. I only had 1 tube, but it definitely added weight. Feels pretty good now and actually heavier then my wood stocked 22X.

Getting some of the CPUM now. Did your stock come camo? or DIY? Thinking of painting both my 880 and 1389, just not sure on color and/or pattern.

   yes, the tape removes the wobble. A few wraps of electrical tape, just back from the tip of the straw barrel, maybe 3/8 inch back. To make a nice snug fitting muzzle.

   That camo is wally world camo duct tape. Same thing on my Big Cat .22 in my avatar. I did it to the 880 at 1st because I despise the feel of plastic. I liked it so much I did the Big Cat .22.

   Just take your time and line up the patterns and it looks good!

No time for the Airguns last night. My son was in the County Champ for Track - qualified for the finals today. Then it's Regional's and then hopefully State's.
Anyway will hit Wally World today and get some more electrical tape, some foam insulation and some of that Camo tape. In your pic at actually like like paint, so I'm going to check it out. Not going to add anymore silicone, just that 1 tubes adds a good bit of weight. Feels good to me now.
Also - hopefully the tinned CPUM are the same, or closed to the boxed as I just picked some up on line at walmart for $6.30 a tin (500).

 as much as I despise plastic I despise pot metal more. I remember as a kid growing up in the 70's how disgusted my dad was of everything pot metal. Pot metal meant cheaply made.

   Given the choice of pot metal or plastic, I'll take plastic on a new AG. Todays pot metal looks worse than the 1970's pot metal.
