Benjamin Discovery vs Maruader? Which one should i buy?

Well guys the title says it all. I am going to say that money is tight but i also want to make a good financial decision. So is the maruader worth the extra $200?

You could always try to save more if you really would rather have a M'rod. Around here a new scuba with valve and no yoke runs around $180. I think a used yoke can be had for $70-$80. All for a 3k setup.
You might be able to find a used stock Disco for a hair under $200 then you can go with the Benji fill setup or the pump.

I'm filling a Marauder with a Benjamin hand pump.  ~50 strokes gives me near full power (~25 fpe) after two magazines in .22 cal (3000 psi to 2500 refill).  I can shoot a 30 shot string and have a 4% ES, but it takes close to 70 stokes (1 rest, 2 sessions of Benji pumping). I'm shooting medium power (15 fpe) now for 10 m target and only fill to 2100 psi and I have about a 50 shot string with 80 strokes (2100 psi to 1400 psi) or 20 shots with about 40 strokes.  So, you need to decide how you want to use the gun, then decide how big of a hurry you're in.  I'll eventually get a tank setup of some kind, but I'm going to pump until I feel I can let go of the cash to do so.  I do love the tunability of the Marauder (and the trigger) and it basically makes this gun a two-for-one deal and still manageable with a hand pump.

I clearly weighed the same decision as you and you now know which direction I went.  I am very happy with my decision.

You can easily tune the m-rod to run from a much lower pressure than 3000 psi.  The m-rod is a much more versatile gun than the disco.  The ONLY reason I would choose a disco over an m-rod was if weight was an issue.

Diso is a great gun but not even in the same class a the Mrod....I'd say go with the Marauder if you have the means.

I faced the same decision...went with a Marauder in 22 cal. since added a 25 cal and a 20 cal marauder to the stable. No regrets. now it is likely that the disco can be tuned to give more power( err...I mean metal-cutting-modified, including a 25 or 30 cal barrel ), but that isn't what I am after just yet...and I'd probably just get a new valve for the marauder made if I was hunting big power. The marauder trigger is quite sweet...it *WILL* spoil ya.

That is a loaded question !!

It is worth $200 more, BUT accessories and support items add up very fast.  Never owned a Disco, but I am totally happy with my .25 MROD.  I planned on buying a MUCH more expensive AG, but now wavering until tap the whole potential of the MROD.

I looked at the Discovery in some detail, before choosing a Mrod.  As mentioned, weight is about the only thing in favor of the Disco.  I wasn't afraid to mod the Disco, but by time I could bring it up to Mrod capabilities, you are talking allot more $ than the difference in price.  The only advantage, might be the incremental steps, but that is false economy.  So, it really comes down to, what Mrod capabilities are you fine to be without.

- Repeater, requires new aftermarket breech along w/mags.
- Shrouded barrel, requires above or breach riser, along with shroud and hardware.
- Trigger, multi screw option, or Mrod trigger pack, and spacer.
- Sound Signature - requires additional length of tko or shroud. 
- Adjustment, power adjuster needed, modified prod hammer for throw, but no velocity port adj.
- Air volume, shot count per power level, double tube disco. 

I'm a guy that loves to tinker and adjust, sometimes just for the learning experience.  If a real good deal on a used disco ever presents it's self, I might still go for one, but its not high on my list.

Any scuba shop usually goes to 3300 psi.  Much harder to find 4500psi.  Mike

Here is my 2 cents....

I own both the disco and mrod in .22 and .177.

The biggest difference that matters to me is the weight. The disco is SO incredibly light it's crazy where as the mrod is very heavy and VERY bulky, something you don't realize till you pick both up.

With that being said you will probably put just as much into the disco after mods like the tko and what not that it will bring you right up to the price of a refurbed mrod (which I think I payed just over $300 for). I know I have put more money into my disco then my mrod costs just trying to make it as good as the mrod.

However don't think that is all the difference right there, I am sure you are aware of the performance upgrades that comes with the mrod:
-MUCH better trigger (very nice!) well worth the extra money right there...
-Tuning, the mrod is built to be tuned to any spec whereas the disco is not at all
-Multi shot magazine, can't tell you how nice this is when you have multiple critters running around, especially at long range.
-This thing is mouse fart quiet, where the disco is as loud as a .22lr
-Your power potential is much much great with the mrod and much much easier to achieve then the disco

Some of the responses I read, while all good, might be a slight misleading.
-I bought my yoke&adapter from ebay for exactly $12 shipped to my door and it works just as good as the 80$ ones, actually better because it has a longer yoke on it.
-I only fill my mrod up to 2k psi (same pressure as disco) and I tuned it so it shoots just like it was at 3k psi.

If you are the type of person that is going to take the gun out of the box and just shoot it, never to mess with it or try to achieve something better out of it I would say the disco is for you. It will not give you the nice fancy things the other guns will, but for the price it gives you the best accuracy for your money.

If this is a hobby for you that you can see yourself getting into the mrod is going to save you a lot more money in the long run, because odds are you buy the disco then the mrod because you want MORE! The mrod will give you everything you could ever ask for at the cheapest price. You won't buy the mrod and need to sell it because another gun offers something better.

Another advantage to the disco beside the weight that I can think of is that I think the sweet spot is at a lower psi in the disco where it wouldn't take as much pumping to refill and would be easier to pump at lower psi. If using a pump it starts getting hard to do after 2,000psi. You can get 3k psi valve screws in the disco to up the total shot capability but it will be harder to fill by pump than shooting in the sweet spot.

thats the real beauty of the marauder gil. you can adjust/tune it to shoot at lower pressures as well. its a pretty versatile gun with full adjustability great accuracy and at entry level ticket prices to the darkside. the disco with mods is also very versatile. the size and weight of the disco is nice though. they both serve a purpose. feature for dollar, its mrod for me. but i would still like to own the disco too. it would be nice to carry squirrel hunting. best bet is to buy both. lol worse than Doritos. cant have just one.

i never owned a Discovery but i do have the .25 Mrod.

i recommend the Mrod.

even in it's "Standard" form it's a highly accurate, hard hitting air rifle.

my main critisizim of it is...it has no ability for "iron" sights.

I think I will pick another Mrod up when they release in synthetic stock.

The Disco is very easy to fill at 2k psi and light weight.  The Mrod is long and heavy.

It really depends on what you are looking to do with it.  If you just want to plink or small game hunt, probably disco.

Mrod would be good for hunting, can do target shooting of course as well.  Either is a good choice, but I would stick with the Marauder.  They are very quiet.

Either way you have time to make your decision since you'll want to wait until the new MROD comes out.  I like that it will have a built in adjustable comb. Plus if youre not interested in it, itll drive down the price of the old models!
