Thread Sealant

Hi Folks, this is my first post to these forums.  I just bought a .22 Discovery and discovered that it has an air leak at the pressure gauge.  I'm hoping someone with some experience can either suggest an appropriate sealant to reseal that joint or send me to the thread where this problem has already been discussed.  Thanks!

Unscrew it and re-teflon tape the threads.

OK, that seems reasonable.  There was never any teflon tape on it to begin with.  should there have been?

There should be an o-ring at the bottom of the hole the gage screws into. Replace that o-ring and tape the threads just in case.

   Good advice. It sounds like damaged O-rings.

If you haven't tried tightening it up yet, just try giving it a gentle nudge first with a Cresent wrench first (or 1" wrench).   There is a chance that might help re-seat the o-ring.
And if that doesn't, take it apart, clean everything out and try it once more.

Thank you for the advice.  When I take it apart there is no o-ring between the gauge and the gauge adapter (the parts diagram confirms this).  This is where the leak is.  The threads between the gauge and adapter was sealed with some kind of rubberized compound which failed.   What is it and where can I get more?

OK, I was thinking the leak was where the adapter screwed into the fitting inside the air tube.

The black rubbery stuff is just another type of pipe sealant.  The thread is a 1/8-27 tapered pipe thread and like PCP-4-ME said, regular Teflon tape (like in the Lowes plumbing dept) will fix it.

So I teflon taped the joint, and it seals well.  Unfortunately, I must have been a little too aggressive with the gauge when I threaded it back on, so now it leaks air from the gauge itself.  Where do I get a new gauge?  or should I send it back  under warranty?  Are they going to get fussy if it looks like the gun was disassembled?

Got 3 things that can leak and all 3 leak at about the same place.

The gauge is threaded into an internal “block”. That “block” has o-rings on it that “jump the gap” of the hole in the tube.

So the gauge can break and the gauge itself can leak.  The gauge is threaded into that block and its threads can leak (have been some simplifications, and not all have an 0-ring for the gauge).  Or one of the two o-rings that “jump the gap” can leak.


Problem is, reguardless of which of the 3 it is, you feel the air coming out in the same area, so its hard to decide which is causing the leak.
