got my tank and have a questions

ok so i got my tank in today, its awesome..

but my question is, it has a toothed collar behind the valve handle you turn to open the valve. its fine for opening the valve, but when you want to close it you have to pull the collar towards the valve before you can turn the handle to close the valve

it looks like i can unscrew a lock nut in the middle of the handle to remove the handle and that collar..

does anyone know if its ok to do that ? or have done that ?

Wow Mike that sounds like it may give you a problem when you go to close the valve when you reach the pressure you want to stop at. You will see you only crack the valve open and your Disco or whatever gun you are filling will fill very quickly, which is the reason you barely crack the valve open. The valve will need to be closed quickly so as not to over fill the gun, so check that out.
If no one can answer that question for you I would go to the dive shop where you plan on having it filled. Explain to him how you will need to close the valve very quickly when it reaches the pressure point you are going to and if the lock ring can be removed

thats what i was thinking, tyler said it was there firefighters which i can see being a good thing incase they pump the knob they dont want to be in a fire and have the valve closed on them

but if it can be removed id like it removed.. will update with a picture in about an hour

Mike it sounds like mine.  If it is scba and used for firemen,  I think that is a safty so they couldn't bump it and turn it of by accident.  How many minutes on it?  And is it a scott 4500?

I was writing the same thing at exactly the same time.   Mine will come off with three screws.
Took 3 days to get it to 4500 but not continious.  With a shoe box.  mine is a 45 minute and is 65 cu ft.

That is an anti shutoff device.The tank Mike purchased is a 44cf or 30 min I believe.The rate at which you fill a pcp is very controllable and it is easy to work the valve and anti shutoff with both hands while connected to the gun.

its empty since it was shipped to me, which is fine i dont have a fill station for it yet.. just the tank and the valve in the tank..

but that collar id like removed or im super gluing it or rubber banding that collar over so it does not effect the closing of the valve.. if it cant be removed thats okish with me i will work around it


possum, this is no way a complaint about the tank or you.. the transaction was super smooth and awesome and the tank is in very good condition

I've had two Carbon Fiber firedepartment tanks, still have one and I guess I was lucky that a previous owner had removed the safety shutoff and I did not have to deal with it.
Mike you may want to consider one of Joe's tank valves. They are a combination tank valve with a restrictor so it gives you a nice slow save fill. Two gauges one for fill pressure and one for tank pressure. Builtin bleed valve and fill hose.
Your going to need a fill assembly so it may be wise to look at one of these.

i was already going to get his scba valve at 184.50 which is well up there on price but i know his quality and hoses are rated for 10,000 psi

The fill SCBA fill assembly is cheaper but the Dinn300 is much nicer and worth the extra

um will that make me have to buy a new adapter for the drive shops to fill the tank ? the best i can find for a fill is 3400psi so that will have to work for now.. but i hope by the end of the year i can get a shoebox

A little different than mine.  but you can still crack and close fast.  Your gun only takes 2000 right?

My carbine will see between 2500 and 3000 and my disco will see 2400ish

if that is what i need and what you were talking about then ya the price difference isnt to bad considering it would be one of the slow fill valve ? and at 229 vs 184.5 for just the fill assembly sounds like a good deal to me. but what fittings would the dive shop need to have to fill the tank ? that way i can call around and ask and find an adapter if they can fill with the above setup


oh and stupid me, i should have looked at the anti close or whatever collar on it.. turns out you can pull it towards the valve and rotate it 90 degree's and it locks in the open position so the valve can be opened and closed freely... but id still like a slow fill valve

Yes Mike that is the one. I should have pasted a picture for you. I would print that picture and take it to the dive shop and show him what you have. They then should be able to tell you exactly what you would need. I would almost think they would have a connector to fit right into the Dinn300 connection. All you would need to do is remove the hose assembly from the valve and the should be as set to go.

idk if i want to to be removing the hose everytime to get it filled, thinking that could wear out the threads ? still just trying to learn what can before buying

ok so i think ive made my mind up after a quick call to joe, i think im going to send him the tank in a couple of weeks and he is going install the new valve, comes with a 40in micro bore hose, 2 glycerin filled gauges and as he put it the whole 9yrds as well as he will pay return shipping if i let him keep the original scba valve thats on the tank now

so considering the price difference and that i like air on the side of safety the slow fill valve is deff the route i want to take.

169  for the fill assembly
14.50 for shipping
184.50 total

229 for the new valve and fill assembly

so for a price difference of 44.50 for the new valve and whole new fill assembly it sounds like a good deal

Mike, you should think about getting the DIN 300 with the second gauge that tells you how much air is left in your tank. The one gauge will only tell you how much air you put in your gun. Call Joe, he can set you up

Mike you do not need to send your tank out to have the valve installed. The old one will unscrew and the new on will screw right in. Seals with an O Ring. I did mine and the hardest part was trying to hold the tank from turning while removing the old valve. It will be pretty tight and  I used a large crescent and hit the crescent with a rubber hammer and it loosend up

norm ever think of using a rubber strapped ratched clamp ? or a normal tie down strap around a rubber bungie strap ?

im stickng with the scba valve for now my fill assembly from joe came in on wensday.. so its all good lol. my tank with a 3400psi fill still get slike 53 fills on a disco so jsut whenever it hits 2000 i will take it in and have it refilled to 3400 since i cant find anywhere to fill to 4500psi.
