Question about brand new air rifles?

when i buy my new air rifle should it be taken apart, cleaned, lubed, and lock tighted before i even shoot it?

if you buy from mike melick ,he does that for you.but yes to if it should be done,if you are talking about a spring type air rifle,

People are going to give you their opinions. I can already tell this is gonna be a hot topic. So much to say, so many choices.

Now for my opinion, as soon as you get it look it over and inspect it. Next take it apart and wipe off all excess oils and grease you can. ( It will void the warranty, but they won't know). Next, run a few patches down your barrel with simple weed wacker line, goo gone, and bits of a napkin or whatever. Then tighten all screws including the screws on your scope. Shoot 500 pellets and see how well it shoots after. If you're not satisfied tune it or send it in for a tune.

Depends from what I have read and been told.  What are you buying?  If it is a German piece, probably not.  Just use loctite to secure the stock screws and scope rings.  I would take it off the stock and check for any abnormalities only.

you can shoot the gun right out of the box if you want to! the reason some of us tune them up or lube them is because we know the effects of what happens to guns that get shot dry or over lubed from the factory! most airguns are dry as a bone from the manufacture and IMO its just like operating a machine if you run it long enough it will accelerate and wear on the moving parts and cause premature failure or galling of parts, think of it like this you wouldn't run your car without oil would you? just my thoughts!

I tear them down right out of the box. You find nicked seals, metal shavings, etc. They are mass produced after all. I found a barrel shim between the action and stock of my HW77. Diana's tend to be under lubed and Weihrauchs over lubed. Both are problems. The cocking linkage of the HW 30/R7 tend to gall the tube. The HW95/R9 twang. The HW77/97 can have breach seal issues. Strip, degrease, de-burr, re-lube and install new parts to address problems. Peace of mind for thousands of shots/years.

Clean the bore as previously mentioned. Any PG bore cleaner will do but I don't recommend Goo Gone as it has an acid component in it and can promote rust under the right conditions. I've never had problems with my new Weihrauchs. Just lucky I guess. The Crosmans will need Charly's trigger but what ever you get shoot a few hundred pellets through it first then decide what it needs.

I clean the bore of mfg "stuff" and lube the external joints.
I don't have the facility to break down a spring rifle.
You risk a warranty rejection if you open up a new rifle and later have to send it in for warranty work.

When I clean the bore, I clean it w goo gone till the patches come out clean.  The manufacturer puts a lot of gunk in the bore to protect it, till it gets to you.  Then I send a couple of oil patches down the bore to coat the cleaned bore w oil.  Having said that, I have also not cleaned one rifle, cuz I could not get my pull thru into the breech, and have had no accuracy problem w that rifle.

 Depends on whether you have the ability to disassemble and reassemble the gun correctly. Whole lot of ruined parts, just because the owner couldn't put his brand new rifle back together or did so incorrectly. I would suggest buying/reading the service manual/pdf, before attempting to lube/tune. Spring guns can be dangerous, what you don't know can seriously injure you?

 I'd put a couple hundred rounds through it first, and then lube or tune! That way you can see the shiny/wear points and know what requires attention.

Unlubed guns produce most velocity and sound like a twangy bucket of bolts and wear quickly. Well maintained/tuned guns produce less velocity, go thunk and last a lifetime!

I would say it really depends on what your buying. Low end sure. A full lube/deburr maybe in order. High end not so much. JMHO.

you can buy any gun you choose,and we have some really good tuner,s here on the gpa,send it to one of them,gene,shadow,mike melick,just to name a few,that way you don,t need a spring compressor,and all the other stuff to properly tune a spring gun,these guys have mill machines ,and know most air guns inside and out,worth every penny to have it done by the pro,s and when you get it back you got a completely smooth and accurate air rifle,imo and as for when you first get your air gun,clean the barrel,shoot as many pellets threw it as you can to get the barrel seasoned ,then decide if you want to upgrade or enhance it,with a tune.good luck and enjoy the air gun you choose.remember it is a addicting hobby.

I like the difference on most of them after thay are tuned. I usually get them take 1 shot to make sure ot works then tear them apart and have the parts ready wwhen they show up. The only springer i havnt tuned as soon as i got it has been my 22 350 pro compact. I bought it used and it shot so nice when i got ot i havnt done anything to it.

But im one of those constant tinkerers. I cant help my self. Id say get it clean the barrel make sure the screws are tight and shoot the snot out of it then worry about tunes.

from what i hear rws is dry. Would i need to fully disassemble it (spring,piston,etc.) to properly lube/clean it?or can i just clean to barrel out lube some places without taken the inner workings out and make sure all screws are tighten?

I bought a 350 .177 TO5 trigger when they where blowing out the last of the Chinese barrel ones last year.  It shot fine out of the box though it had a scraping feel on cocking.  I shot maybee 500 pellets through it and mine needed shimming to get the scope mid range on adjustment (barrel droop as noted on Diana break barrels).

I ordered the Vortek kit and opened her up.  It was dry as described, debured the inside receiver tube, honed cross hatched the compression chamber, added a little molly on the rear of the new Vortek piston seal, lubed the new spring package with the included white lithium.   (All the basic stuff you read on spring guns).

Now it feels like an instrument rather than a tool.  I bought a Mendoza peep sight for it and enjoy it allot more than a scope.  I didn't really understand a .177 magnum before buying this, it shoots so flat and fast though, it makes perfect sense to me now.  For me going back to iron sights was the key to this, the Vortek kit and the unscoped handling are superb.
