RWS 34 compression tube.

I took my rws apart today with the spring compressor to start cleaning it up for the vortek kit due tommorow. When i shined a light in the compression tube i found a 4 inch gouge down the length of the tube. It's not very wide, i'm just wondering how to remove it. I'm hoping the gun is still useable and the scratch is fixable. Other than being completly dry, every else seems fine. Is this gun fixable, and if so what do i use to take off the burr.? Did you have a problem before tearing it down?  Does the piston seal show wear at the same location? If not, polish it up abit and life goes on.

You can use a brake cylinder hone available from auto parts stores. If you had an O-Rilleys they are pretty resonable there....

Is this ahead of the cocking slot?
 Is this in line with the cocking slot on the opposite side (Scope rail Side)?

Ahead of the slot (in the compression chamber) would be from a bur on the piston and an undersized seal.

In line with cocking slot on( scope rail side) would be from the pressure of cocking the rifle and the piston biting into the tube.

Look on the piston for the affected area polish and apply moly.
On the receiver a fine sandpaper would work, seeing a hone would get caught in the slot.
Another way to fix this is either have the piston professionally buttoned, or you can order old school buttons from Air Rifle Headquarters.
Glue them on and sand to fit snug, no more metal to metal contact.

thats the real question where is the scratch located in the tube? in the cocking slot area or in the compression tube area?

The scratch is at the cocking slot. I used fine grit sand paper to remove the burrs. There is still a spot you can see the gouge, is this okay?. I removed the burs off of the piston and compression tube. The piston wouldn't even go back into the receiver until i smoothed it out. Everything seems to be working smoothly now. You can see where metal is missing, but its smooth. The scratch is on the scope rail side. I also deburred the holes for the scope rail. But it seems like they don't line up right to have caused the scratch.

Thanks for this Info!  I do not want to hijack this topic, but I think the problem has been solved already.

I recently renewed the leather seal on my old Diana 35 and noticed also gouging along the Compression Tube in the area where it slides while being cocked.  I polished the old piston ends as it was quite scratched from the friction.  The metal is of a softer type alloy and was really easy to polish and smooth.  I even made a high shine finish, so it is really pimped out now!  Looks almost like chrome!

My question is, these "buttons", can you give more info please?

I deduce this will also reduce noise and let the action seem smoother.

Am I right?  Will a reduction in energy follow?

Buttons help keep the piston centered in the tube. They stop the tail end of the piston making contact with the tube when cocking. You may or may not see a SLIGHT change in velocity.

Ive had mixed results with the glue on buttons. After researching, I found a plastic shim material that is none effected by lubricants and use it instead ( glued on in the same fashion as the buttons). These come in different thicknesses and with the approximate correct film thickness, more piston area can be  covered without sacrificing proper lube/moly distribution between the piston and compression tube sliding areas nor will it slow the piston down with excessive drag. Provides a smoother cocking cycle and keeps things aligned as they should be.
