Height level of targets

Is there a general rule of thumb for how high a target should be? Does it depend on your position? Iow, if I'm standing, should the target be at eye level, or does it make any difference?

Thanks Richard- just didn't know if there were any kind of rules for target height in matches.

lizzie i like to vary my targets height. i generally bench shoot in the my back yard range but for those how hunt you will seldom get a shot that is perfect height wise any way. so for me differant height targets make for a better shooter......dave

In the GTA matches there're no regs for the height of targets.
I know in real competitions there are.

Actually if you want to use regulation matches as a reference.
From the ISSF rules sec 6.3.9
The center of the targets must be within the following heights when measured from the level of the floor of the firing point:
10 m ranges, 1.40 m +/- 0.05 m (55.12 inches +/- 1.97 inches or approx 55-1/8" +/-2")
If you have a fairly level floor, just measure up 1.4m
On a sloping surface, like I have, I use a tripod to put a laser level at 1.4m, then shoot the laser downrange to determine 1.4 at the target. This however is subject to measurement error when leveling the laser.
The most accurate method (and probably cheapest) that I know of is to use a water level. This is a water filled hose with a clear section at both ends, set the water level at the shooting position at 1.4m, and the water level at the target will be at 1.4m.
The ISSF matches are standing only.
I don't know what the NRA 3P target heights are, since they add prone and kneeling to the mix.
