Dwood, I think you'll find that no matter the weight of the scope, that erector tube, suspension, and the optics are gonna get a workout. I believe the thicker tubing would be more for beefing up the erector adjustment and suspension, as well as the torquing required to mount the scope, and avoid distortion.
The salesman looked at me like I had two heads, when I said an airgun could break even very expensive scopes.
