Did you know?   CROWS can laugh!!!!!   I found this out this morning.   A familar call echoed around me while I was in the backyard.   Looking around,  I spotted 2 large crrows sitting in the tops of some nearby pines.   They just sat there making racket.   Slipped back into the house and picked up an AG and some pellets.  It was a long distance for me, about 75yards and 60+ feet up.  Carefully I aimed and fired.  Not a feather cut.  They just looked in my direction and cawed in a mocking way.  Tried it again and missed again.  Still they remained.  And still they mocked.   Finally after my last attempt, they lazily flew away.  Mocking as they disappeared out of sight.

I think they departed for 2 reasons.  1. as an act of kindness to me.   2. they figured the odds that sooner or later ( I might get lucky ) one of the shots may connect.

Anyway,  I 'm sure that they where laughing during the entire scene.

I believe it, or you can be sure they were talking and communicating about you, until they finally agreed to relocate.  They could probably see the pellet coming and its trajectory half way after it slowed down, and figured the next one might be too close for comfort   That cawing you heard was probably their mathematical and probability calculations

Meanwhile, there were two ravens sitting 100 yards away, laughing at the crows who lacked the common sense to get out of the way with the first shot.

Bogey, not only can those crows laugh but they can wink also. When I drive past them just down the road from my house where they know I can't shoot at them I'd swear they have winked at me with a wry crow smile as if to say "nah nah na nah nah, you can't shoot me". They get educated fast. I'd swear crows give my place a wide berth probably because they have passed the word amongs't themselves that "there's a guy down there with a rifle".

I could swear crows telepathically send multiple pictures of my face, me holding a gun, and an aerial photo of my property to all other crows in the area!! 
It's the only way it explains hundreds, maybe thousands of crows flying around my house all day long, and/or landing 80-100yds away on someone else's property (laughing, smiling, giggling, winking, etc.), when they used to hang out at mine all the time..  Don't you just hate smart critters?

They are smart birds!  I was out a couple of days ago and heard a bunch so I grabbed my electronic call.  I got them close to me, but they know better than to penetrate the perimeter.  He stayed just out of air gun range looking for the source of the noise. 

I probably could have gotten them to come on in, but my neighbors were outside and the racket from the crow call was clearly annoying them. Not to mention the twenty or so crows cawing back at me!

Where as i see your desire to try taking extra shots at crows that are out of range puts you at a disadvantage in the future . There are now 2 out there that can warn others and will play scout over your land for a long time .One thing i learned about local crows only shoot solo's and make it count .At that distance even 18fpe at the muzzle would have a hard time penetrating the wing bones of an adult crow you said it was a far shot off the bat for you how where you going to hit it's head then . You don't say what gun where you shooting .17 or .22 cal ,anyway better luck next time and hope to see pic's soon

I have Ravens here dozens of them and only ever took one shot at one that was about 70 yards out. I heard a thwack and he jumped, then flew off. There is one very large Raven that comes by and he laughs, and I can even get him to do it too. All I have to do is chuckle laugh and he will do the same right back at me. So I have started throwing old bread or left overs on the roof when he comes around. Now when I go out back if he is around he laughs as loud as he can to get my attention so I will get him a snack. Not sure it would be cool to shoot at them at this time or if it was to begin with. So I just let them be.
