I am still a newbie on all my shooting... Reading about 10 meter air pistol taught me about the diopter.
I think it is amazing...I just have the most plain and simple.
I bought a Lyman diopter and I like it very much, I use it on my amber shooting glasses.
I usually practice some with the diopter and then some without.
The diopter makes it possible for me to hold the target front and rear sight in focus. This I can't do without the little peep hole.
My eyes are over 40 and sometimes need reading glasses.
I bought my diopter on Midway USA. Midway is one of the coolest resources.
When I look at Olympic 10 meter shooters they often have the fancy shooting glasses.
Libby Calahan the worlds champ @ unlimited pistol is always using one.
The Olympic shooters also use blinders and a cover for the non shooting eye... I don't need that much stuff on my face.
Am I the only air gunner on this forum who uses this thing?

I shoot w/o an iris on the glasses.
As for the non shooting eye, I prefer something less opaque. scotch tape does fine. It just needs to prevent the non aiming eye from focusing on the target or sights. The other reason is the more light you cut off from your non aiming eye the more difficult the body has to keep balance, it uses visual input to help determine balance.
As for blinders, if you are shooting at a match w lots of activity on the side of you, that would help reduce the visual distraction.
BTW, I beat you, I wear TRI-focals. But for shooting I have a special pair made up, w the aiming eye lens set so I can focus on the front sight and still see the target enough to aim at it.

If I start entering matches (real live 10m matches) I would consider the serious shooting glasses.
I tried the blocking the non shooting eye. I am not sure if I like it. I might switch to using my right eye too. I could use some instruction.
The main range officer at one of the places I shoot gives me some advice but that is a powder gun range and I think the fundamental philosophies are different.
I go to a pistol range... they shoot 9mms, .38s & .45s There are only 2 airgunners that I know of, shooting there.
In this way there is no depth of field to your eyeball. The gun and target are in the same visual plane
In this photo the big circle to the right is the suction cup it goes on the shooting glasses out of the line of sight (to the far outside) the small hole to the left is the "Peep Hole"

The reason for blocking the non aiming eye is so you don't strain to close the eye or have the non-aiming eye confuse the aiming.
Closing the non-aiming eye also removes that eye from the bodies balance mechanism, so it is just a bit harder to keep in balance.
But in the end, you should do what works best for YOU, not anyone else.

10-4
AC12
I use the Diopter for a while and then switch it out for a while during a session @ the range.
I think my eye gets tired and needs a rest from the thing.
My shots are usually better with it.
