The brightest light

We lived in the foot hills of the Sierras,. One afternoon in mid summer, a bright sunny day. I was driving up a hill about a 1/4 of a mile away from where we lived, and looked down at the edge of our yard. I could see a pin point of very bright silver white light coming from under a thick layer of oak leaves. I thought it must be the sun glinting off an aluminum can under the leaves. Later as I was coming down the hill I looked down, and the light was still there. An intense silver white light, I pulled into the yard and went to see what it was. I pulled back a layer of leaves, the light was deeper. I carefully removed the leaves, the light that I could see from a 1/4 mile away on a bright sunny day was coming from a tiny red worm. About 8mm. long and about 1.3 mm. in diameter.

No idea what it was. I've seen bioluminescent flies the size of knats, that are only out for two weeks. Glowing moss under creek banks, and some crawling insects. But they all glowed a greenish color and not intensely bright. You wouldn't see any of that in day light. The worm had a whole different kind of chemical.

Reminds me of the TV commercial with the guy yelling, "High Tide, guys, High Tide" as the Alabama team gets off a bus for a game (or maybe returning from a victory, it isn't clear) and finally being corrected by someone in the crowd.
