My stepson lost a speech-giving contest to a girl who related this story just after it happened in about 1997.... She had the audience in stitches, according to my wife....

True story.  It was not a bizarre mistake.  It was a practical joke perpetrated by the two guys who agreed to dispose of the whale.  They blew it up knowing it would be a spectacular mess.
