If I'm not mistaken, Nomadic Pirate dropped a pig with a .177 springer at short range about 3 or 4 years ago.

If memory serves, there may have been some posts with skulls as visual aids for explaining his thinking.

I believe that was with a Disco at 20 fpe shooting H&N barracuda Match(pointed dome pellets).  It was a smallish pig, but it definitely put him to sleep

I'll say this again, I love what you are doing with your .17 cal

Here's my try with a .17 not a small pig, a nice juvi boar, the disco was set at 17 FPE with the Baracuda

Congrats and how big was the hog that got away, 300lbs+?

I don't know how big it was to be honest, but I could see the cutters through the scope, so mostly definitely over 200lbs.  Most of the boars where I hunt don't really get good cutters, until they are well north of 200lbs(usually 250+).  I had him in the crosshairs looking straight at me, but I didn't want to take a straight on head shot with it looking straight at me head up.  Most likely, it would have glanced off the skull and just injured the boar.  That's that whole "don't take the shot, unless you have THE SHOT" thing.  It's hard not to take the shot, but I'd rather not take it and know I did the right thing

Well, at least I remembered the right gun,lol!  I didn't mean to imply it was a baby.  I call babies footballs, haha.  I use the term pig for all sizes sometimes.  Smallish in my head is 100lbs and under(perfect for eating).  I don't know how much yours weighed, but I was guessing and going by memory   Still, great shooting and showing what a .177 is capable of.  You are one of the trailblazers for the air gun pig hunting, and a big part of what got me started!

You made the right call and maybe you'll get another chance at him as they're critters of habit where even when they migrate to other areas they eventually return to your area cycling through their familiar lands. I had one at 50yds winding me once with his head up looking straight at me fixing to run and I tagged him in the heart and dropped him in place with the mini14 but I know guys with large bore AG can do the same.

Oh yeah, if I had the power/caliber for a body shot, that would have been a very different ending.  The .177, no matter the power, isn't body shot material,lol.
