Empirical data (n = 1) on mainspring fatigue from extended time cocked

I took the beaten Maccari out for inspection. The spring is now 2mm shorter than it was after break-in but before the perma-compression. There is no visible change in the distances between the coils, but the spring appears slightly wavy, or canted, which wasn't there to begin with.

Individual cases abound, but the chrono-driven fact is that following ~20 hours of being cocked, this well-broken-in, low-stress-by-design mainspring lost 50 fps or so for good.

I have a RM 377 Crossman made by Mendoza that I left cocked the first 12-15 yers I have owned it. It never was very accurate so I decided to get another airgun to dispatch varmints. After much reading here I tried different pellets until I found what the Mendoza liked. It isn’t very strong ( I don’t have a chrono) but it is very accurate out to around 30 yds. It easily shoots inside a one inch circle.

So, you recovered 30 of the 80 fps' lost?

If so that is valuable information.

The spring may be useless in the 350, but it may be of use in other models, like the 34 or the 45.
