To lube, or not to lube; that is the question.

i cast the NOE 217 hunters and shoot them out of my hotrod 1322 and 362, and have been shooting them naked as the day they were born. So far, so good. Im wondering if there would be any benefits to lubing them as far as barrel cleanliness. Im thinking a thinned coat of Johnsons paste wax. It has carnuba wax so would leave a thin, hard coating. Has anyone tried this? Wayne, you shoot your cast a lot,  your thoughts?

I powder coat mine. Can't see where lube would be a bad thing though.

Any lube is good to use to break the friction that is not petroleum based.  The lube helps to even out the speeds better (especially when choked) for a better ES/SD.  They also help to prevent lead fouling thus the barrel stays cleaner longer.  The trick is to use a very thin and even coating when lubing ammo.  I have used 5% shock oil, silicon oil/grease, FP-10, Ballistol, and various others to lube ammo with.  I also like to start out with a very clean and polished barrel and then follow up with some clear Trewax to seal any imperfections in the barrel in addition to using an ammo lube.

Keith,  my main reasons for lubing are to keep the barrel clean  and try for a little more consistency with my cast pellets.  So i guess ill experiment and report back my findings. Maybe it will benefit someone else.

I use liquid wrench silicone spray to lube my slugs for sizing. what's left after sizing or doesn't come off is what goes down range. having good success with this in my impact

Those are the reasons I lube.  I also find when lubing that between deep cleanings using a dry brushless bore snake works well when pulled through a time or two after a long plinking session.  This seems to remove any excess lube or dust and extends the deep cleanings even more.
