If you really want to go all out, look at the Ataman AP-16!  It's a multi-shot PCP that is compact enough to holster and delivered plenty of power to dispatch a squirrel.  It's also very accurate!

If I got the ataman I probly wouldn't need the rifle anymore. 40 yards shot run up and finish him, I get to practice aiming and exercise running lol.

At close range, a Beeman p-17 could get the job done as well.

Not disagreeing on this one, but I used the P17 once...

Required two "coup de grace" shots with Crosman field points to do the deed. Maybe it was a tough chipper (not squirrel), maybe the pellets were the wrong shape or just "out of range" at 7-10ft distance?

It'll work, but borderline (IMO). Just didn't have the gusto and left me with less than great feelings on using it for that purpose. Others may have had better results.

I had better luck using BB's (from a fairly accurate BB gun/rifle) at 520-ish to 600-ish actual fps (pumps varied depending on distance), even though that's frowned apon by most. But steel BB's do penetrate much better at lower velocity than lead. Safety glasses are a must   

Side track story... Apologies, but may be useful information

If you're wondering on how I know about BB's, I had a buddy over-run with chippers and red squirrels years ago (abundant food and no predators). Went over to visit (not pest) and he was trying to pick them off with his (New at the time) Benjamin Trail NP .22. He asked if I had my Nitro Venom in the vehicle to lend a hand, but only had a Crosman 2100 pumper and BB's... Well, started at 10 pumps, way too much and BB's were zipping through (or missing) chippers and reds like nothing there (20 yards give or take) and we were dodging BB ricochetes. Through trial and error I found 4-5-6 pumps to give adequate penetration and best accuracy at <10-15-20-ish yards with BB's, by that I mean 80% through and through penetration, with minimal retained energy when they exited. I had no idea on actual velocity at the time, just going by the seat of my pants. Actually got good attaining fuse box shots at 15-18 yards.

Needless to say, one of the most fun/funny pesting expeditions I've ever had. 

Later I got a Legacy 1000 pumper that was freakishly accurate with Daisy BB's and did the same ordeal a couple years later with that gun (that I kept in the vehicle). Come to find out, they both chronied about 520-530 at 4 pumps, 560-570 at 5 pumps, 600-ish at 6 pumps (if I recall correctly).

While a 5.1gr BB @ 525fps (+/-) may only make 3fpe, that's what I consider the absolute bottom of "adequate energy". The P17 is a 2-2.5fpe gun, which may work fine, but there are better options (than both BB's and low power "target" pistols).

I think the carbine version of this air gun is more interesting.  What the manufacturers need to do is create an air pistol that converts to a carbine and vice versa.



If the OP is wanting a really inexpensive but durable air pistol he might look at the Umarex Trevox.  I have one but would not recommend anything but close up shots with the pistol.

The trigger is awful.  That's putting it mildly.  I disassembled mine and polished all the trigger components.  It is still heavy but not as rough as it was out of the box.

Anyway, what can you expect for a pistol that costs less than $80?

We might as well throw a Crosman 600 in the mix. It's as compact as Bill's venerable Willie G. Stubbs and carries 10 pellets on board. I call mine Big Loud Bertha cause it is loud.

I know it’s pricey, but an Edgun Leshy is a perfect companion pistol. Folds in half, built like a tank, powerful, ultra lightweight, and mine loves JSB Hades. When I go coyote hunting with my .357 Bulldog, the Leshy is always in my back pack. It’s the perfect woodswalker or finish em off Airgun.
