Hw80 / R1 holds??

Ron I have the feeling you have the R1 in pieces by now . Hope I'm wrong but your shooting in the best conditions , 10 yards in your own basement. I still think it's the pellets.

Thanks Chris I'm convinced the gun is fine. I'm not taking it apart until there is something wrong with it. It may be the pellets but there's only 4 choices in 20 caliber domes and I have 3 of them. There's not a lot of choices out there. I'll have to play more with the choices I have. You have to come over and shoot one day.

There is always room for improvement with spring guns, and I’m sure that you’ll figure out how to extract the best accuracy our of your R1.  But I too wrestled with an R1 to improve accuracy (with both .177 and .22 barrels) for about a year and ultimately wasn’t successful.  I could get decent accuracy and consistency in absolute terms.  But for some reason the R1 always fell short of my other spring guns in relative terms.  I attributed that to the shot cycle characteristics of the large 30mm compression chamber.  This is just a theory and I certainly could have missed something.  Good luck.

I hold R1's moderately at the pistol grip and pulled against my shoulder with maybe 1 lb. of force.  I let the fore end rest on my hand, either a balled up fist with the stock over my thumb/index finger or with the stock on the back of my hand with my palm laid flat on some surface.  I never grip the fore end unless I am shooting off hand and then my shots are so wild anyway that I cannot say whether the hand position is a factor or not, lol!

As far as holds go , I always got better results from.a light hold. Using a 308 off a bi pod and rear bag to my HW95 in .177 .I only shoot bench rest so with the air rifle on the bench I use the Protektor leather owl ear narrow front rest bag under the front stock , butt just resting in my shoulder no pressure and a light touch on the trigger . I don't follow through on the trigger press . Trigger guard is resting on the bench so I'm really only working the trigger . More like cheating then shooting but I like tight groups . I guess I'm a true bench rest shooter.

Thanks Chris, there's a heavier 20 caliber domed pellet I haven't tried yet. That's the forth and final pellet option in this caliber. Maybe I should give it a try if I can't get this thing worked out with the other three available pellets.

Not saying this is the case with Ron's HW80, but the thing with the .20 cal that keeps me from getting one is: if your .177 or .22 cal springer turns out to be really pellet picky, you have literally more than a 100 options at hand to try. But if your .20 cal turns out choosy, you run out of pellets to try in a heartbeat.

Yeah Duke you have a good point there. I'm hoping to work this out with available pellets. Most people do.

Generally I don't recommend 20 caliber for casual air gunners because the lack of availability and choices of pellets. Also the guns are themselves are more expensive in 20 caliber.

I wanted to try a 20 for long range shooting. Theoretically they should be better than 177 while flatter than 22. I first converted my long owned Hw95 to 20 cal and the gun was amazing. I brought it up to SeanGabrell's place and he shot it for hours. Then I bought a 20 cal special edition blue laminate R9. I bought it because I liked the stock not because its a 20. Then I accidentally bought (long story) this 177 R1. IMO 177 isn't a good caliber for the R1 at full power so I converted it to 20 with the new barrel that worked so well on the 95. Now I have two 20s to play with when I was happy with one.

While I conceptual like the caliber I don't see it as a practical choice for most Air gunners. I would have just as easily converted the R1 to 22 but I already had the 20 caliber barrel on the 95 and redundancy of the type with the 20 cal R9. I'm not giving up on the R1. Chances are it's me or the gun before it's the pellets. The gun has a wicked fast shot cycle that I'd like to keep so I'm going to work on me before messing with the gun.
