My understanding of TimmyMac's take on it is, that big cylinder of metal on the top of the pump rod holds oil, so you just put 4 or 5 drops of oil on the link there (instead of the usual 1 drop or so) and the excess eventually works it's way down to the pump cup, and beyond to the valve innards. It makes sense because if you've noticed, there is a little bit of wiggle room in the pump tube when that pump rod is going up and down, so that cylinder is touching both sides of the pump tube all along it's length. Any excess oil is going to get smeared around in the pump tube.
