I couldn't stand it any more and decided to brave the 14 mile an hour, cool gusty cross winds here in Southern KY this afternoon in our back yard and do some testing of my .22 caliber Crosman/Benji 392PA. I bought this rifle new several years ago from Walmart and to now had just worked a bit with it. Oh. Heavy cloud cover meant no sun glare so there was that.
I systematically went from 5 to 8 pumps, shooting three to four round strings at a measured 41 feet from a rest. I tried the H+N Baracuda Match 21+ grain pellets but had no happy results with any level of pumps. So I switched to RWS Superdome 14.5 grain pellets hopping for better results.
This wonderful gun has a Williams aperture rear sight installed by me shortly after purchase. My eyes are not good at age 62+, and I have my choice or wearing or not wearing my $1.00 reading glasses from Dollar Tree. Choosing a fuzzy front sight and a clear bullseye (over fuzzy target and clear post front sight) I shot the strings and learned much to my satisfaction and happiness that my 392 does much better than I am able to shoot! This group was typical after I found the best pump number. 1/2 inch center to center with one flyer I called as soon as I pulled the trigger.
I really love this rifle. When new though I just couldn't get past the pregnant mama bass fore end and the thick rear stock. It just didn't fit my hands, so I removed both and attacked them with a spokeshave, rasps and abrasive paper. Looking for visual balance, continuity and flow from the rear stock and fore end to muzzle, it now has a good feel in my hands. 6 coats of Minwax Antique Oil finish rubbed out and buffed.
I have to admit that I was very surprised I was able to shoot these groups. I'm not that good. I know that 41 feet is very little to many very skilled folks here but to me it's "minute of chipmunk" when garden time for my beloved wife Penny and me arrives here in a couple months.
And I know that I need to adjust the rear sight for the right hand of bullseye grouping, but between my pronounced arthritis (please forgive my printing on my targets, which I keep a while for reference) the cool weather and winds I thought that best left for another back yard range day.
