Hello all, been awhile since I’ve posted. Got back into motorcycles after a long hiatus and haven’t had much time for airguns as of late.
Recently a friend and co-worker brought me his uncle’s Daisy/Winchester 1000/Hatsan model whatever to have a look at it. He brought it to me covered in a light surface rust, crappy bundled scope still attached, and with a tin of oldish Daisy Maxspeed wadcutters. He said his uncle wanted to smoke a groundhog with it, and wanted to know if it still worked/was up to the task. I told him his uncle should be looking for a .22 or larger caliber for that kind of work, but that an accurate .177 with a WELL PRACTICED SHOOTER and within reasonable range (20 yards or so) should be no problem. Anyway, I brought the thing home to test.
Chrony numbers were pretty good for an old rust-bucket. It averaged 927 FPS with the Daisy 7.8gr(?) pellets, but was a little slow with CP 10.5s at 751fps. It was a little rough cocking, but the shot cycle itself was fairly smooth, and it even has a decent trigger. So I cleaned it up (which turned out pretty nice), and told him it seemed ok. He must not have liked my tone, so he replied “make it better.” Swell....
I looked for new seals: nope. New springs: nada. So I did what any airgun enthusiast would do and tore it apart anyway. I have a “junk” model 85 power plant and &^^& barrel just sitting in my tool box, so I figured I’ll strip them both and see what’s interchangeable. The 85 was shooting pretty hot, it just had such a garbage barrel that it wouldn’t group better than 3” at any range beyond “garage distance” (being about six yards). I knew the spring and seal were good (having rebuild it before giving up on the barrel), so I planned to install the new seal equipped piston and spring in the Daisy...nope. Pistons are different, seals are different, even the air tubes are different...sheesh! So here’s what I did to pick up an average of 50fps:
Model 85 spring installed
“Heat treated” the seal (was surprised that worked!).
Plugged the little detent in the end of the piston (what that’s for I can’t imagine!).
Clean barrel, etc-etc.

I have a Win.1000 in wood and .177. I also had .177 Daisy 1000 in plastic. Got them about the same time a few years ago. The Daisy was rough I painted the metal flat back and ordered a wood Win. stock from Daisy. The gun broke so I threw it in the parts bin. In the mean time I found a .177 Win. 800 with a different smaller stock. It fit in the new Win. stock I had. Same gun just less spring. Now I also have the newer chinese Win. 1100 in wood and .177. Similar but also very different.
