Yes... a normal hammer is in free flight once the sear is released. With an SSG the hammer has a controlled stop. The hammer flight is limited to the length of the rod.

Correct. The spring is captured and partially compressed by the rod. Preloaded so to speek.
It keeps spring pressure off of the hammer after its been released and prevents hammer bounce.
