trigger stages

    trigger stages? find with my npxl 1100 that i am pulling the trigger about 1/2 way during the up breath and pull the rest of the way during the down breath pause and my groups tightened.


what are trigger stages and what exactly am i adjusting with the adjustment screw on the trigger?

The stock trigger screw adjusts the second stage/ final let off stage.

The stock trigger not worthy, get a GRT111 trigger.  Then the screws will adjust properly, one for the first stage and the stock screw remains the second stage.  These can be adjusted beautifully and very predictable and smooth unlike the stock one.

the grt iii triger was sent for on friday was hoping to learn as much about triggers before it gets here.

Trigger stages has to do with the internals of the trigger mechanism.  Think of a lever. 
You have a long handle lever to lift the object (1st stage).
Then you shift to a shorter handled lever to finish the lift (2nd stage).

Trigger stages can be felt as you pull the trigger.  Depending on how the trigger is setup the feel can be different, but here is an example:
- the first stage is an easy pull,
- then you hit a point where it takes more effort to pull the trigger, that is the 2nd stage,
- then the gun fires.

That is for a 2 stage trigger.
Some triggers are single stage, in the first example, there isn't 2 levers, you just have one lever.

Some advertised 2 stage triggers have what I call a "false first stage."  When you first pull the trigger, nothing is really happening. All you are doing is taking up the slack in the mechanism.  So it is a single stage trigger with slop in the mechanics.

thank you for the reply  that gives me food for thought  my npxl has a very long pull and 1 dont yet sence any difference in the pull. have a week before the gt iii gets here. thanks again robert

theKid mentions the stock adjusting screw is to be left in to adjust the GRTIII.

THIS IS INCORRECT!!!


The stock screw is to be removed before installing the new trigger, it has it's own second stage adjusting screw.
