22 starlings and we're just getting started.

Starlings are hitting my wife's blue bird feeders on a regular basis.  The season is going to be fun as it will probably run well into March.  It's 11 yards from the patio door to the rail on the deck where the small dried worm cups are anchored.  Starlings chase off the blues and the finches and then fight each other over the cups. It's a challenge as they are never sitting still but constantly moving while eating. Plus my steel deck spindles are constantly in the way for a clear shot.  But that's what hunting is all about. 
Those starling with heart failure end up on a tree stump about 50 yards behind the house. I've seen a hawk at the buffet line and there's a coyote that seems to be making an appearance much more frequently.
My Diana 34P has been steady as rock.  Every time I think the scope is off, I take it downstairs to my short range and find out it mostly me that is letting a bad trigger management creep into my shooting technique. Bad weather is forecast so my mornings should be busier at the patio door.

I am only up to 7 Starlings so far but I have not been going after them on a daily basis.  I leave them out too and they are usually gone in the morning.  I know there is a possum out there and they won't think twice about eating anything dead.  If the skunks return, I will start picking up the yellow beaks and dispose of them before dark.  It's the only way to discourage the skunks from coming around.

Normally average 40 to 50 over each winter but since I lost my clean up hawk (avatar) the starlings are even more numerous.  I laid in a good supply of pellets so the lady bird hawk and the coyote are happy.  Lady bird (former mate to my avatar) will not come up to the deck like big bird did to clean up the fallen birds thus requiring me to haul them to the back of our lot.  Something that keeps ringing in my ear like "get those dead birds off our deck" gets me out of the house and a short walk.

Rich, my friend lives in the mountains with lots of oak trees and he shoots starlings and a large female redtail hawk picks them up and flies over his head spreading her wings and screeching....seems like she is thanking him but not sure.
