With my New FX Crown Centinnum, hits a Squirrel head shot, we have had these peskey Tree rats doing a LOT of damage to my fruit trees as well as damaging our phone lines with the nesting and chewing, I need to call AT&T for line repair every 3 months, and same old problem, they can not and are not allowed to remedy the problem because of laws and rules, they don't complain as it is job security , well today I got my first cure shot, just one shot to the left temple.

I understand your situation and frustration but I suggest you check the CA hunting regulations to make sure you aren't shooting a game animal out of season.

Thanks for the heads up, but in Calif it is open season on ground and fox squirrel,  the grey is under control, and starts in September.  So we are good to go.

Nice shooting. Keep it up. Car problems here. I have taken out at least a dozen confirmed and maybe 6 more with non-confirmed. While it may be my imagination,.... they seem to be avoiding the area all together now. Hunting pressure I am sure has some mental effect on them,... or not,... maybe?     

Rest assured,... once you have it under control for the year,.... they will be right back the next year.

They are cute and fuzzy and fun to watch,... and if they leave me alone, I leave them alone. If not,... game on!

I only do head shots now and try to keep shots to 30 yards or so. I use the Maximus Hunter version in .22 running 15.89's. Rested or at least braced is best. In most cases, it is braced to the house or a tree. I have had a few with really solid body shots and they still managed to get off. I do not like that. I like to walk up and confirm and put another quick round in if needed to speed things along. With a solid head shot, that is not needed 99% of the time.

Some of it may be my imagination, but some of it is certainly not. I have gotten permits to take out the pests, and limit myself to when they are in my garden and  if they stop to look back while leaving the garden. I've taken out quite a few this summer, but the supply seems endless. I have a couple of apple trees on the side of my house that they love to pillage. The remaining one have learned to leave the property (it's almost like they know the deed description) when the door clicks open. Also they've learned to go to the apple trees by going along the back property line and then turning up the side to go to the apple trees which doesn't allow me a safe shot.

Truth be told it probably was these squirrels behavior all along (the dumb ones have already been culled), there are trees that they run to that are just outside the property line and then onto my neighbors trees and then up to the apple trees which doesn't allow me a shot, and the door opening does indicate a hunter coming out, no matter how quiet I am and the property line gets them to bigger trees.

They are smart (to a point) for sure. I have had more than a few hop to the other side of a tree (to hide),... and if they don't move up or down,... I will stay on target area and more often than not they will peek back around within a minute,.. showing their head only. Got a few that way.

Some seem to magically disappear. Some make a flat out run for it through the trees,.. hopping from branch to branch with rather sloppy moves compared to their usual laser like precision. I have yet to see one miss and hit the ground, but a few have come very close to a full on miss.

Glad you're on top of things. I thought you we're shooting grays because you caled them "tree rats". I know ground squirrels don't live in trees. Sorry for the confusion

My bad, I used Tree Rat as a general term, but this guy was a skinny slim tailed Ground Squirrel, I did zero my new scope a Vortex Diamond Back with HN target trophy, then the Head shot was a Hades, I was impressed with the accuracy.
