My friend just got a Benjamin Prowler. Man, this thing is hard to cock. Is this normal? Will it be easier after it breaks in? He's already thinking of returning it

It does not get easier to cock, but it does get much more accurate after the barrel breaks in a little. The Summit Ranger NP2 around the same price takes only 32 lbs compared to the Prowlers 40 lbs.  A Valiant SBD for a few bucks more is also better. If there are other brands at the store where you bought, there may be others like an Umarex  Synergis, Diana 250 etc.

A large part of the problem is that the pivot screw is too tight. Loosen it and retighten so that the barrel will just barely drop on its own. With safety on and unloaded, muzzle pointed in safe direction, cock the gun and return it ALMOST to battery. The barrel should fall on its own barely or with just a little help. Loosen it 'til it drops. Then tighten a little at a time until it is right. This, most times, also adds to accuracy.
