With the caveat that I.am always the one with my face on the stock next to the action when it fires, they are pretty much the same, with the nod maybe going to the 97. They are both pretty quiet

They are both pretty quietThank you. Congratulations on having two amazing guns. Do you like 1 over the other for any reason?I really hate to admit this...having only had my 97 a couple of weeks, and having had my TX for almost six months...I'm liking the 97 more. It's HIGHLY accurate, easier to shoot accurately than the TX, but it is twangy, but the accuracy more than makes up for it. The fit and finish of the TX is unexcelled, and to be honest, I got my TX during the beginning of the revelation that many of them were being received by customers with rust in the barrel. I cleaned mine before shooting it, no rust noted, but for some reason, it's just not printing as well as I figure it should at the moment. So, I'll figger that out, both of them like the 14.66 grain H&N FTT. Both are scoped with UTG compact scopes. Really glad I have both of them!
... Spring guns in general seem louder to the shooter than to bystanders because you have your face on the stock.
They are about the same asuming a similar tune. If one has a loose fitting spring guide it will twang louder than the other. That said, they are both quiet. Spring guns in general seem louder to the shooter than to bystanders because you have your face on the stock.
I don't have a HW97 but a number of HW rifles. My TX200 is the quietest of all my spring rifles. It's the only rifle that has baffles in the shroud. Like CM Shooter said a lot depends on the tune. My TX is tuned for sub 12fpe but I have other rifles well under 12fpe. I am sure the noise difference between the two rifles in question are similiar enough it should not be a criteria in your consideration on buying either rifle. Let me make it easy for you. Go to Krale Shooting Sports in the Netherlands (or wherever they are) and order the HW97 for around $400 shipped to your door in 3 days. Order the 12fpe model in 177. Then shoot it and never look back. So your choice is really simple after all. The TX is great but not for the price difference you can get thru buying from Krale. The HW is just as good so take the extra $$ and apply it to a better scope or a bunch of pellets.
