Sadly, plenty of folk do things they're not supposed to do with airguns and it makes the rest of us look bad.  And it shines a light on a sport and past time that we'd rather they didn't.  I don't mind the increase in air gunner numbers, but I do mind the attention it brings.

I once learned something prophetic about morality and shooting.  It's easy to shoot stuff; but when faced with the opportunity, even if it's legal, to take the shot and not doing so for safety reasons, or poor shot placement, etc., is the true measure of an ethical shooter.  Not taking the shot when it's legal and fair is hard to do, but it's a necessary control we need to have.  I see plenty of shots folk take of something on the top of a slope without cause or concern as to where the pellet or slug may go once it leaves the target body and like to hope that all shooters know their effective range and back stops, but, alas, that's not always the case.

Maybe he shot them with a hunting rifle, with adequate power to kill a deer or two, and said he used a pellet gun to try to avoid any legal hassles.

It happens. Deer can be destructive, along with any number of animals. No one would think twice about killing a rat doing damage.

I would not kill a deer, but I have 13 acres and don't care if they eat a plant or two.

Yes, all that money on the lawn would have been better spent on acreage if you want to shoot deer at night. This guys a tool.
