How to get the best shot string ?

I have a gauntlet and was wondering about how to get the longest string.. Should I lower the regulator pressure (1200 psi)and adjust the hammer spring ? It is a .177 shooting 10 .5 gr pellets at 920fps.. I am wanting long range accuracy ..

Do a search.  Travis (Old Pro) has a kit that will get you more shots per charge with some other benefits also.  There was an entire thread devoted to this and Hajimoto even made a very helpful video detailing how to install it.

Have one installed.. Was just wondering if the es and the shot string would be better if I dropped the regulator psi down to where I would get 900 fps and give the hammer, when uncocked, a bit of free space with the adjuster screw....

The secret to the "best shot string" is 100% contingent on a multiple of variables.

• Pellet Weight
• Pellet Shape
• Group Size
• Target Distance
• Target Shot Count
• Target FPE
• Lowest ES

As a shooter, you need to define what you are looking for, do you want maximum shot count, maximum energy deliverance, maximum accuracy or maximum consistency.
In order for a shooter to minimize the chase, you need to minimize the variables.


In the pursuit of maximum shot count it is simple, light pellet weight, low hammer energy delivers maximum shot count.
When pursuing maximum accuracy you have to determine the best BC pellet at the most consistent ft/s at any given distance and your barrel.
Maximum energy deliverance is typically the 180 degrees opposite of the Maximum shot count settings, you will be using a heavier pellet with high hammer energy.


In any of these scenarios acceptable accuracy is a must because what good is a high shot count if you can't hit anything, so please understand the operative word here of "maximum" should be considered the ultimate for your rifle and not necessarily all Gauntlets.

Narrow down the variables and attack it from there because 1 rifle can not be all things all the time. Once you share with me what the two most important variables are to you, I can assist with getting that Gauntlet to a happy place for you.

In a .177 you can achieve a pretty long shot count with either method of lower reg pressure or low hammer preload. I always run the regulator at a pressure to drive a pellet to 900-920ft/s and I can ALWAYS slow it down with the preload adjuster. The flip side is you have regulator adjusted low and then if you wan to shoot a heavier pellet or increase the range, you will run out of preload adjustment to make it there which would require reshimming of the regulator.


What I think you conveyed in your response was you are trying to achieve accuracy and range with a heavier pellet. The first thin g you need to determine is what ft/s does that pellet need to fly from your barrel to be the most accurate.  The only way to know what that is, is to shoot 5 shot groups while adjusting the ft/s until you achieve the tightest group possible. That MAY require the regulator pressure to be bumped up if you are not able to achieve the sweet ft/s for that pellet in your barrel.


I know this may read like a regurgitation of information you already know but to be honest, I may not be understanding the question and if that's the case, I am sorry.

Thanks brother!! That is what I was looking for.. My question about adjusting the regulator to achieve the desired fps instead of increasing the preload on the hammer spring is what I wondered  since this is my first regulated rifle.. So right now it is shooting 10.65 gr at 920 fps with increasing the preload of 2 turns H&N Barracuda match and the AA FH 10.34 gr..  I need some more samples of heavy weight pellets.. I have many tins of lighter ones.. I guess when I get settled in a new home I might have time to try to find out whats best.. Losing my house to a flood s ucksss !! At least after I cleaned the water out of the rifle and installing the JSA kit and shortened spacer, no leaks and still shoots !!
