Hello all, first off great site alot of info to absorb. I am new to air guns, unless you count the millions of bb's I shot growing up on a dairy farm in Arkansas. I now reside in Missouri with my wife, and my two young sons. I have recently feel in love with smallbore sillouette, have joined a local range that is pretty close to my home and shoot there almost every sunday, along with my 10 year old Zach. Our club is great they allow him to use some shooting sticks I bought him, and with those and his CZ scout he is now shooting in the low 30's. Let me clarify we use the larger I think they are pistol targets, and they are in yards not Meters like they should be but is our set up and is fun. So after about 13 weeks of shooting and getting up into the mid to low 30's myself, I have kinda hit a wall. Is blasted hot here as I am sure it is everywhere, and I have stopped going to the range much to practice, and have noticed my scores dropping. After talking with one of the best shots at our club, I asked him how he did it. He said he shoots his airgun almost every night. Hum light bulb went off, I have a very large basement and is very long, I can get 20 yards out of it. It is always cool has good lighting I was in buisness. Lucked out and another member found out I was looking for a good air gun and he had purchased 3 at once, gave one to his boy, kept himself one and sold me this gem. I had no idea a pellet rifle would shoot like this, and I am still learning. So long story short I am loving this gun and the practise I shoot atleast 60 rounds a night sometimes more depending on work that day, I work construction so the heat takes a toll. My pellet trap is some 2x10's that I had left over from a project and the back is lined with duct seal, no problems so far.

I am wanting to get some animal targets to knock down would that be safe indoors? Should I line the sides with duct seal also? What is normal practise range for offhanded shooting?

Welcome to the GTA! Can't go wrong with a HW97K!
Very nice rifle. The knock down targets maybe a little much in the basement. I have one in my back yard and here many ricochets. They make pellet traps that hang small ones that should be OK. You could build a large pellet trap and put the knock down ones in it. I built a large one out of 2X6's and 2X4's. The wood catches the pellets. I would just make it extra deep.
Did I mention that is a SWEET Rifle!

Welcome WireNut1212 to the GTA!!! I don't think I would shoot steel in that nice of a basement an it look's like your kid's play there(lead dust) so I'd just play it safe an keep the steel for outdoor use(I shoot in mine but it's old an so am I LOL)? An really since you already shoot small bore comp.,just come an join the shoot on here to have something to look forward to in the evening's with your practice, there is a couple of 10 yd's an such. Just go down to the target forum area an check it out.

Welcome, I am new here as well! I only can shoot at local ranges ($15-$25 AN HOUR) or drive 45 minutes each way to my parents house every other weekend. I envy all those that can shoot indoors or on their property. :-D

Welcome boys! I too think the steel should be best left to the outdoors. You might try cruising your local area for a good sized piece of secluded land to set up a range on. Locate the owner and ask for permission. Worst case scenario, they will say "No". Sure beats paying range fees.

Wirenut121 and Jonesin....a big welcome to the GTA forum and family.
Wow....his first airgun....and it's a splendid HW97K. And yep....practising with an airgun helps with the powder burners.

Welcome Wirenut! You've picked a great rifle to start with. I'm waiting for mine to be returned from a tune this coming week. It was a fine shooter before and I know it's gonna be even better. You'll be spoiled! You'll have a hard time choosing your next one....Oh yeah! There WILL be a next one!..lol. I see you now live in Missouri..so do I. I'm in the Southwest corner of the state.

Where did you send it for a tune? Was it time or a new gun? If it was time how do you know when it is time? Ya I am in Republic MO. Ya I am lucky I can shoot in my basement and am only about 10 mins from my local range which I am a member.
