There was a drowning today

Anyone who's seen my " ever shot a mouse in your house " thread knows that I've recently had a mouse problem ( used to get one here and there , but thus was crazy )

Well I certainly didn't have to shoot this one ( not hunting them anyway )

 I went into the kitchen to give buttercup a treat and when I happened to look down I saw something in her water bowl, it turns out that a  young mouse had actually went for a swim and drowned, don't they know never to go swimming without an adult 😁
Her water bowl was getting old anyways so now she's got a brand new one . Luckily her bowl had been cleaned and refilled less than an hour before and she hadn't drank out of it .

It's certainly a first for me and I thought it was funny .
Has anyone else ever had this happen ?

When I was much younger (junior high/high school) I used to work at a horse stable. We used 5 gallon buckets in hanging racks made of rebar to water the horses. In the same rack was a different type of bucket to put the grain in.

Turns out some horses are very sloppy eaters and will often drop grain in their water when eating. Normal procedure was to haul the buckets out of the rack, take them to the end of the barn and dump the water, rinse out the bucket and refill morning, noon, and evening.

Often in the morning there would be either a dead rat or sometimes a rat desperately treading water.

And that is also the story of how and why I got my first Benjamin air rifle.

When I was young I went out collecting maple syrup ( in the old days buckets hung on taps on trees we would dump the buckets into a tank on a sled behind a caterpillar tractor) we would find mice in some of the buckets and you would toss the mouse and dump the bucket in the tank. ( it all was boiled off anyway    )

There is actually a kind of mouse or rat trap you can make at home that works by drowning. Fill a deep container (like a home depot bucket) with water. Make sure the water level is low enough that a mouse can't swim out once it falls in, but high enough to drown a mouse. Place the bucket where you have seen rodent signs, in an area where they can reach the top of it (like on the floor next to a pantry shelf or a window ledge). Put a dab of peanut butter/cracker in the center of a light sheet of newspaper, then carefully place this newspaper over your bucket.  The next rodent that jumps on that newspaper to reach the bait is going to fall inside and drown. You will find the body in the morning, and can dispose of it and reset the trap as much as you need.

If you want to live-catch without drowning, just leave out the water. You will find a mouse at the bottom of a deep bucket, who can't jump out the steep sides.

I've heard of that, but sadly I wouldn't be able to put it anywhere where my dog couldn't get the bait so I can't do it.
