I have several hundred filled cartridges of different sizes.  Most have no markings but they are colored.  Some green (Oxygen??) some silver and some red(acetylene??).  Do the colors denote contents?

Will Oxygen propel BBs?

Why CO2 not just air (mostly Nitrogen)?

I have a compressor that can go to 4500 psi and could fill them with air, but could not cap them.

Like the idea of targets, will try that.

Robert Lane once designed a reusable 12g HPA cartridge for Brocock, though it was properly designed from scratch rather than a rehash from an old disposable CO2 cartridge.

You need to research a bit I think, 4500 psi is way to much pressure...

The CO2 in the carts is a liquid at about 850psi. It's tough to show things that have to happen at 850psi. The carts have 12 grams of liquid CO2 in them. You can't compress air (or nitrogen) enough to turn it into liquid, or get 12 grams into one of those carts, even if the carts would hold the pressure. The guns structure and valves are designed to operate at about 850 psi, and if you tried to put significantly more than about 1200-1400 psi it may blow our the valve, or explode on you. In other words, forget about it.

That explains a lot.  Air at 850 in the cart. would maybe give you one or two shots.  Not worth the time.  Might be faster MV but no more than 1 or 2 shots?  Those rechargeable cartridges with CO2 would be great but I cant see that it ever went beyond the design stage.....maybe because the cost of one would probably be $100 to $150 or so (based on the price of regulators) and you could get a bunch of 12 gm cartridges for that money.
